Match 22
17th January 1914
Crystal Palace (h)

Devon Senior Cup 2nd Round
Plymouth Argyle Reserves (a)

Exeter City 1 Crystal Palace 1,
Southern League.

Fresh from their Cup triumph at Portsmouth, Exeter City quite naturally chose the same eleven players for today's match against the Palace at St James's Park. Crystal Palace, who ousted Norwich from the Cup last week, included Colclough, who has taken over at left-back from Bulcock, the former Grecian, Bright, the former Sittingbourne player, and the tall amateur, B.J.Bateman, late of Sutton Court, who played his first Southern League match against Exeter earlier in the season. The rest of the side have visited St James's Park previously.

Teams:

City:- Pym; Fort, Strettle; Rigby, Lagan, Smith; Holt, Lovett, Whittaker, McCann, Marshall.

Palace:- Johnson; Collyer, Colclough; York, Hughes, Hanger; Bateman, Hewitt, Smith, Bright, Davies.

Referee:- Mr F.Curtis, of Bristol.

Linesmen:- Messrs P.Headford and J.Locock.

The afternoon was fine, and the pitch in good condition. The crowd, however, were rather slow in turning up, and at 2.45there were fewer than four thousand present. Rigby received a splendid ovation when he led the Grecians out, and he duly complied with his first duty as captain, by winning the toss.

After fifteen minutes' play Holt dashed through nearly to the goal-line with the Palace defence appealing for offside. The ball was sent over to the left, and Marshall, at full speed, drove it home for the first goal. Shortly before half-time Marshall put the ball across for Lovett to net, but Whittaker was palpably offside at the time, and the goal was promptly disallowed.

The second half had barely commenced before the Palace scored an equalising goal, Davies breasting the ball over the line from Bateman's centre. The remainder of the game was largely dominated by the defences of both sides, and exciting incidents were few and far between, although in the last five minutes Hewitt failed badly for the Palace, while a header by Holt was intercepted by Colclough, almost on the goal-line.

DEVON SENIOR CUP, SECOND ROUND.
