Match 24
7th February 1914
Watford

Plymouth & District League
Babbacombe (a)

Southern League: City 1 Watford 1.

The outlook for today's Southern League match at St. James's Park was very cheerless, for a driving rain fell all the morning, and high winds prevailed. The crowd was a very small one at the start, and the bank at the lower end was quite deserted. There were about 3,000 present when the teams came out. Rigby won the toss and elected to defend the St James's Road end. Teams:-

City:- Pym; Fort, Strettle; Rigby, Lagan, Smith; Holt, Lovett, Whittaker, McCann, and Goodwin.

Watford:- Webster; Bulling, Stewart; Gregory (V), Kennedy, Pantling; Mitchell, Gregory (F), McLaughlan, White, and Carr.

Referee:- Mr C.C.Fallowfield, of London.

Linesmen:- Messrs F.W.Reeve and S.F.Hyde.

The match against Watford, played in pouring rain and with the pitch cutting up badly, was very tame after the excitement of the visit of Aston Villa last week. Watford were the livelier side in the first half, and White drove a shot over the bar.

Watford were the first to look dangerous at the restart, and a corner was given away by Strettle, from which Carr volleyed over the bar. At the other end a flying centre from Goodwin was headed clear by Stewart, then Lovett gave Webster a fine header to save. At 4.25 p.m. Exeter opened the scoring. Lagan passed to Holt, who centred the ball over the goalkeeper's head, and McCann drove it home. The game, which had been very tame, livened up considerably after this, and McCann skimmed the crossbar.

Ten minutes from the close Exeter's defence was unable to get the ball away from Carr, who closed in and passed square to White, for the latter to force the ball into the net.
