SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 28TH.

NORTHAMPTON 2 CITY 1.

Today Exeter were at the County Cricket Club ground, home of the "Cobblers", where they had never yet won, and where in five visits they had scored but a solitary goal. The team departed for Northampton at 1.40 yesterday afternoon with Mr F. Parkhouse in charge, arriving at their destination shortly before 7 o'clock.

The Cobblers sprang a surprise this morning by announcing that Lloyd-Favies's place at right-back would be filled by Tomkins, a former Rushden player, who was at outside-right when the teams met at Exeter on October 25th. Lloyd-Davies, the Northampton captain, was assisting Wales at centre-half in today's International match against Scotland, at Glasgow. Rawlings, a young player from the Derbyshire district, was at outside-right, Birtles being in the Reserves.

Cobblers:- Thorpe; Tomkins, Clipstone; Manning, Lessons, Tull; Rawlings, Freeman, King, Bellamy, Hughes.

City:- Pym; Fort, Strettle; Rigby, Lagan, Smith; Holt, Whittaker, Brooksbank, McCann, Goodwin.

The early morning was fine, but subsequently showers drifted in to spoil the day. The City team visited the ground during the morning, and found the pitch to be in almost perfect condition. When Rigby lead out the Grecians out there was a special cheer for Whittaker, the former Cobbler. Exeter soon encountered their usual luck at Northampton, for after eight minutes a centre from Hughes caught Strettle's boot, and the ball, from sixteen yards out, flew into the net at lightning speed, there being nothing that Pym could do to stop its flight.

At the end of half an hour the Cobblers were still leading by the one goal, but a minute later King dashed on to a ground pass from Freeman, beat Fort for speed, and shot. The leather hit the bottom of the post and curled into the net well out of the reach of Pym, falling at full stretch. It was a good goal, well worked for and well taken.

Half-time: Northampton 2 Exeter nil.

The second half had been in progress for about twenty minutes when a drizzle of rain set in and the light became very bad. Pym saved very smartly from Bellamy at close quarters, then Goodwin got away in midfield. His centre was missed by Clipstone and the ball was captured by Whittaker, who evaded Clipstone, pushed the leather forward a few yards and steered it past Thorpe. The turf had become very slippery in the rain, and this affected the play which followed. Pym distinguished himself by making a brilliant save from Hughes, and the match ended with the result as stated.

In a closely contested game at St James's Park the Royal Scots were beaten by Exeter City Reserves by two goals to one. Exeter's goals both came from Marshall, the first being the result of an individual break through, and the second, twenty minutes after ends had been changed, a header from a centre by Orr. Howie then scored for the Royal Scots with a good header.

Reserves:- Loram; Harding, Hunt; Cox, Pratt, Evans; Tucker, Lewis, Marshall, Lovett, Orr.

Royal Scots:- Evans; Leake, Wathen; McLeod, Langford, Verdin; Harris, Howie, Gillon, Wilson, Groves.
