Brighton & Hove Albion v Exeter City

W.A.Pridham, the Torquay Town amateur, was at inside-right in the City team that visited Brighton today, with Whittaker in his old position on the wing. For Exeter's hosts, Whiting resumed his position in goal in place of Wilcox, while in consequence of their centre-half, Parkes, being transferred to Sheffield Wednesday in the week, a trial was given to G.Coomber, an amateur, who has been playing well for the Reserves. The match was set aside for the benefit of Booth, right-half, who has been at Brighton since 1908.

Rain commenced to fall shortly before the start, when there was a crowd of about 3,000 round the railings. Brighton won the toss, and Brooksbank kicked off against a powerful wind.

Brighton:- Whiting; Spencer, Leeming; Booth, Coomber, Higham; Longstaff, Dodd, Jones, Webb, Tyler.

Exeter:- Pym; Fort, Strettle; Rigby, Lagan, Smith; Whittaker, Pridham, Brooksbank, McCann, Goodwin.

Referee:- Mr A.T.Randle, of Coventry.

It was most unfortunate for Booth that his benefit match should have taken place under such wretched conditions; indeed, the gate was the smallest for a Southern League game this season at the Goldstone Road ground, consequently everyone concerned was sorry for this stalwart and hard-working player.

Jones opened the scoring for the home side in six minutes, when he followed up Higham's shot to put the rebound, off Pym, in the net. After 25 minutes the City equalised. Pridhamwas fouled by Spencer just outside the penalty line, and Whittaker, who took the free-kick, scored with a magnificent first-time shot. Two minutes before the interval a corner-kick from Longstaff was missed by Pym, and Webb was thus enabled to score from an easy position. Nothing further was added in the second period.

Final: Brighton 2, Exeter City 1.
