WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 23RD.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE MATCH AT ST. JAMES'S PARK.

Exeter City 2 Northampton 1

Two thousand were present at St James's Park this afternoon, when the Grecians beat Northampton by two goals to one. The City had out the same side as accounted for Gillingham on Saturday, but the Cobblers had Lockett and Dawson away from their forward line, and played Whitworth for the first time at centre, Bellamy coming in at inside-right and Smith appearing at outside-left.

The first half was a blank, and during this period the halves and backs of Northampton put up a fine defensive game. Bellamy missed an easy chance early on, but from then to the interval Exeter did most of the attacking. Their forwards though could make no impression on Clipstone and Davies near goal, and W.Goodwin in the centre was well held by Lessons. The Cobblers' centre-half was lucky on at least one occasion, however, not to have had a penalty awarded against him. Hughes made a fine dashing run at the opening of the second half, and struck the side of the net with his shot. Following on that brief raid play was all in favour of the City, and the score was opened by Green, who rushed through a centre by F.Goodwin. The play of the Exeter forwards improved as the game wore on, and Billy Goodwin netted but was ruled offside. Later he scored the Grecians' second goal after a splendid individual effort. Four minutes before the close Exeter's Smith handled in the penalty area and Clipstone reduced the lead from the spot. Exeter were deserving winners, and in the second half their football was of a very high standard.
