Match 08
14th October 1914
Merthyr Town (h)

Wednesday October 14th.

EXETER CITY 2 MERTHYR TOWN 1.

A Charity Cup Tie

CITY TOO GOOD FOR MERTHYR TOWN:

At St. James's Park this afternoon, Exeter City beat Merthyr Town in the first round of the Southern Charity Cup by 2 - 1.

The game was by no means brilliant, and the Grecians held the upper hand practically from start to finish. In the first half Green scored after Pym had made fine saves from Merthyr's wing men, Reed, the Devon cricketer, and Jones. Shortly before the interval Lovett kicked the ball from Gibbons'shands into the net, and Exeter led at half time by 2-nil.

The only goal of the second half was scored by Stoodley, who gave Pym no chance from a centre by Reed. Merthyr improved after this success, but were comfortably held by the City defence.

Forwards in Dashing Form.

The play was affected by the slippery state of the turf, and combination was at a discount throughout. The only excitement was caused by Exeter's forward rushes, especially those of Holt, the most prominent of a line that was full of dash, if little else. Gibbons had many narrow escapes and there was no doubt Exeter's victory being deserved. Reed and Clay were Merthyr's best forwards, and Kirby's passes were well executed. Clay and Kirby of course are ex-Grecians. Exeter's best players were Smith, Holt, Evans, and Strettle. There were a thousand spectators.
