Match 15
28th November 1914
Bristol Rovers (a)

Saturday November 28th.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE:

Bristol Rovers 2 Exeter City 1

It was by no means a great game that 5,000 spectators watched at Eastville this afternoon, for the very heavy ground upset the calculations of players on both sides to a considerable degree, most notably of the forwards, whilst in the second half, more so than in the first, there were far too many displays of temper for the play to be thoroughly enjoyable.

ROVERS:

Stansfield

Harvie Taylor

Crompton Walker Hardman

Payne Caddick Davison McCann Squires

Referee:- Mr I.G.A.Sharpe, of Lichfield.

CITY:

Goodwin(F) Lovett Goodwin(W) Green Holt
Evans Lagan Smith

Strettle Marshall

Pym

Exeter obtained the lead with the play only five minutes old. for then Billy Goodwin, with his back to the goal, received a pass from Holt and got a shot in by hooking the ball over his shoulder. It looked very much as if the leather would sail over the bar, but the wind carried it just under, to the evident surprise of Stansfield.

The rest of the play in the first half was fairly even, but the Rovers lost several good chances to equalise, and the most glaring miss of all was made by Walker, who, after thrusting his way through in great style and then with only Pym to beat at a very short range, shot weakly wide.

Exeter still held rather a lucky one goal lead at half-time, and early after the change of ends it looked like being even more luckily increased, for Hardman, in putting back, sent the ball on to the bottom of one of the posts of his own goal.

Harvie later brilliantly stopped Fred Goodwin when the City winger was in P splendid position, and then the Rovers rallied. It was not until the second half was 25 minutes old, however, that they drew level. They did so by Davison, who turned to full account an opening made by Squires. Five minutes later Squires, from a pass by Davison, beat Pym with what proved to be the winning goal of the match.

Directly after he had scored Squires was roughly met by Smith, who on several previous occasions had fouled him, and fists were used. There were other threatening incidents before the close of play, and two or three players were lucky to escape cautions. In several matches this season the City have encountered erstwhile colleagues; in the Rovers' team today were Crompton, at right half, and. McCann, at inside left.
