Match 27
10th February 1915
Southern Charity Cup, R2
Plymouth Argyle (a)

Wednesday, February 10th.

Charity Cup, second round.

PLYMOUTH ARGYLE v EXETER CITY

Heavy rain and gales prevailed at Home Fark this afternoon, when Devon's rival clubs met for the first time this season, the occasion being the second round of the Southern Charity Cup. The attendance was no more than 1,000 at the start. Exeter were at full strength, whilst the Argyle played Dixon at inside left and Blott at left half.

ARGYLE:-

Craig;

Russell, Atterbury;

Durnin, Wilcox, Blott;

Kirkpatrick, Gallogley, Burch, Dixon, Gosling.

CITY:-

Pym; Marshall, Strettle;

Rigby, Lagan, Smith;

Holt, Evans, W.Goodwin, Lovett, Dockray.

Exeter opened in very promising style, Russell repelling two attacks on the left after Lagan had headed away a high centre by Gosling. The City returned to the attack, and Craig scraped away a low shot from Goodwin.

Good combination between Durnin, Gallogley, and Kirkpatrick made things dangerous for the City, but Burch was offside. In the next Argyle attack Pym saved from Blott.

Smith was prominent for the City, and he put Goodwin through, but the shot went straight to Craig, who gathered the ball at chest height.

Burch Scores for Argyle.

After this escape Plymouth renewed their attack, and Burch, meeting a forward pass from Gallogley, scored. The game had been in progress for twenty minutes.

Following the Argyle goal Exeter advanced, and Dockray beat the defence to send Goodwin through, but with only Craig to beat the City centre forward shot wide. There were further exciting incidents round the Argyle goal, but no further scoring took place before the interval.

The Argyle opened the second half strongly, Smith effecting a clever clearance from Kirkpatrick after the winger had beaten Marshall. Holt found Atterbury a difficult obstacle, but on oneoccasion forced him to concede a corner, which Craig punched out. The Exeter forwards were very slow in the vicinity of goal, and several times good approach work by Dockray was spoilt.

Twice the winger essayed individual efforts, and from his second attempt almost succeeded in equalising, Atterbury giving another corner when a goal seemed certain.

Fifteen minutes from the end Burch again shot into the net but the point was disallowed on the grounds of offside.

The game had its periods of exciting incidents, andconsidering the state of the ground the exchanges were fast.

Russell, Durnin, and Gallogley did best for the Argyle, as did Lagan, Dockray, and Marshall for the Grecians. Nothing further was scored, the final score being Argyle 1 City 0.
