Match 35
27th March 1915
Millwall (a)
MILLWALL 2 EXETER CITY 1.
Saturday March 27th.
Five minutes from the end of this Southern League match at the Millwall ground, New Cross, London, the Exeter City team, having already taken the lead, looked as if they were about to win a third consecutive contest away from home, and large numbers of people prepared to leave the ground on that assumption. But at this critical stage the goal which had been scored fifteen minutes earlier by Billy Goodwin was equalised by Davis with one of his fast low shots, and mere seconds before the referee blew the final whistle Moody headed in the winner from Hall's corner. A more fateful closing five minutes has surely never been known in Exeter's history.
For two thirds of the game the City defence had been a sure shield, although Millwall did waste some excellent during the opening forty five minutes, but the Grecians lost their hold of the game when they altered their strategy. In other words, theysought to strengthen their defence after Goodwin had scored his goal, but instead of achieving that they put the whole machine out of gear.
The usual disposition of forces had been equal to every task set before it, and the impulsive Davis had received few chances, but Exeter went all wrong with four and sometimes three forwards, and gave Millwall a distinct loophole.
The Exeter right wing seldom got going, and the honours were chiefly taken by Fred Goodwin and Dockray, whose long centre was responsible for Billy Goodwin's goal.
