Match 39
10th April 1915
Croydon Common (a)
SATURDAY APRIL 10TH.
CROYDON COMMON 0 EXETER CITY 0.
A goalless draw at South Norwood was a fitting result, for on the play in this match, the last one at home for the Croydon club, neither side deserved to win. In fact Croydon gave one of their poorest displays, and with the City doing little better the five thousand spectators, who had the rare experience of basking in glorious sunshine, went away thoroughly disappointed.
Croydon:-
Williamson;
Little and Hutchins;
Hartness, Bushell, and Ryder;
Barnfather, Smith(C), Goodman, Chester, and Dawson.
Exeter City:-
Pym;
Marshall and Strettle;
Rigby, Pratt, and Smith(W);
Holt, Evans, Goodwin(W), Goodwin(F), Dockray.
Referee:- Mr J.Baldock.
Accidents played an important part in the game. In the first minutes Hartness strained his groin, and after receiving the trainer's attention on the touch-line had to leave the field. After about ten minutes he returned to hobble about at outside right, with Barnfather dropping back.
Exeter were even more handicapped than Croydon by injury, as Billy Goodwin badly bruised his left elbow by falling, early in the game, but continued playing until nearing the interval. He was then charged off the ball, and fell on the damaged joint, when he was taken off the field suffering acute pain, andwas unable to resume.
Pratt, who kept Goodman well in check, was the pick of the Exeter team, and Holt and Evans the most prominent forwards.
