Richards, Wendy

Wendy Richards played in goal for Exeter Rangers, from 1989 to 1995. She retired from playing in 2000 having played in excess of 100 games. Wendy was also secretary of Exeter Rangers and secretary of the Exeter and District League for many years.

The following was a programme article from 1994.

PLAYER PROFILE - WENDY RICHARDS

Wendy was born on 16 March 1859! and lives in the Redhills area of Exeter, where she lives with her daughter Bobbi. Wendy started off her working career at Sun Alliance Insurance where she worked for 17 years. Then after one night of passion, 9 months later she had Bobbi (of which Sam is the best God Mother any child could wish for). After having a break of 12 months she started back at work with South West Telecoms where she is a Senior Computer Input Clerk (which means she is just a typist). Wendy first played football in 1982 for Bridge Club before she moved a few seasons later to Exeter Rangers. She now plays regularly in between the sticks, she trys her best. Wendy supports Arsenal (somebody has to). Her favourite players are Gary Lineker and Peter Shilton. She enjoys listening to 20's music, Queen, Fleetwood Mac, David Essex, Status Quo and T Rex. Wendy likes playing footy as she says its a way of getting out and meeting people because lets face it at her age she doesn't get much chance. She also likes travelling to other clubs, especially the teas afterwards, and it gets her out of the ironing at home!! Her favourite food is Cottage Pie and her favourite tipple is Rum and Black (YUK). Wendy's most memorable game was against Pelynt where Rangers won 5-2 and Wendy got Player of the Match she doesn't get it much now, with her rheumatism and all that. Wendy's worst moment in her career so far was when she ran into the goal post and knocked herself out at Chard which was really clever and also falling over a hump at Exeter City Big Bank end when the ball was at the other end of the pitch. Wendy's hobbies are reading (Enid Blytons Famous Five), computers and computer games, writing player profiles and she used to like riding her moped (Passola Turbo Charge). Her daughter Bobbi also keeps her busy most of the time. Wendy's ambitions are to carry on playing until she reaches the big 40 and to see Bobbi play football. Her football dislikes are changing the rules for the back pass to goalkeepers. We had one instance last season against Tongwynlais where there was a total mix up between Wendy and somebody called Sam, but it could have happened to anyone.
