EXETER'S BRILLIANT ATTACK

Saturday, September 6. At St James's Park.

EXETER CITY 3 LUTON TOWN 2.

At first sight the result of the match at St James's Park to day does not seem at all impressive. The Grecians were playing on their own ground, and the Luton men only arrived in Exeter one and a quarter hours before the start of the match, and they had had a long and tiring journey. If the home team had not won there would have been general disappointment. But Swansea Town and Gillingham, at all events, will appreciate the merit of Exeter's performance, for in the matches with those two clubs the Luton defence had been penetrated once only, and that was five minutes after the start of the opening game of the season, Evan Jones, of Swansea, doing the trick.

LUTON

The Exeter attack gave the same Luton defence such a tying-up today as they are only likely to experience at rare intervals in the course of the season. The three goals which fell to the City were the just reward of brilliant play by the front line, linked with extraordinary perseverance. For long spells the Luton team was penned in its own half whilst the City forwards and halves applied a sustained pressure, but the visitors' rearguard was equal to almost every emergency.

Elvey, the sandy-haired left back, proved himself a tower of strength, and in Dunn he had a fine partner. The two have played together for years, and understand one another perfectly. Other players who caught the eye in the Luton team were Rutherford and Summers. At Southampton last week and against Reading on Wednesday the

City forwards did well, yet were not convincing. Not so today. Every man in the line, Connor, Makin, Goodwin, Lovett, and Doc kray, worked like a Trojan. The weather was warm, and how they stuck the pace throughout the ninety minutes of the game mystery, particularly as the pace was pretty much of is a their making, and the five thousand spectators admired them the more own for it. Their stamina was amazing. Many a forward line would have gone to pieces after experiencing such ill-luck as to have first one and then a second dearly won goal negatived in the space of three minutes through faulty work in another department. But the City team was out for a win, and made sure of achieving it. The close passing game was abandoned for the time being, and the wisdom of the change in method was proved by the result. Description of the Play.

The first half favoured the City, who territorially had much the better of the game, but time and again they were frustrated by Elvey and Dunn when goals seemed imminent. Thirty minutes from the start Goodwin got away down the centre and swung the ball out to Dockray, who cut in from his wing and obtained the first goal with a fast ground shot that gave Summers no chance. Luton Town set up a tremendous counter-attack, and Coleburne, being beaten by Hensman, handled the ball to prevent it going to Tomlinson. Pym got his hands to the ball as Elvey drove it in from the penalty, but the force of the shot carried it into the net at a tangent.

Half-time: Exeter City 1 Luton Town 1.

The visitors had the better of the opening period when ends were changed, and Pym was kept busy. Twenty-five minutes of play saw Exeter ahead, however, when a lovely dribble by Connor led to Lovett getting his head to the winger's centre, and Summers, in trying to save, only helped the ball further into the net. Two minutes later Shreeve fouled Hensman, and Tomlinson fastened on to the ball from the free kick and beat Pym, thus levelling the scores for the second time. From the second of two corners Makin headed the City's winning goal, but hurt himself in doing so.
