10/9/1919
SPLENDID WIN FOR THE GRECIANS
Wednesday, September 10.
Elm Park, Reading.
READING O EXETER CITY 1.
The new system instituted by the Football League of playing return matches one week after the first meeting between any two clubs has not been adopted by the Southern League, which is still adhering, generally, to the principle of playing right through the list in the first half of the season and deciding the return matches in the second period. The mid-week games, however, are an exception to the rule, and thus it was that Exeter City journeyed East today to play Reading at Elm Park just one week after the encounter between the two clubs at St James's Park.
The Exeter party arrived at Reading punctually, and proceeded at once to Elm Park by tram, reaching the ground at 3 o'clock.

Exeter City won deservedly, the winning goal being obtained when only two minutes remained for play. The City hade made a forward rush, and getting the home defence into a tangle Goodwin finished off the move with a fast rising shot to the top of the net with Archibald hopelessly beaten. The first half was most uninteresting, with no goals and very little in the nature of constructive football from either side. Reading missed the services of Smith and Harbidge, their deputies being below standard.
