SPARKLING PLAY AT ST.JAMES'S PARK

Wednesday, October 8.

Exeter City 3 Southend United 0.

Played at Exeter, before an attendance of two thousand. The City won by three goals to nil. Southend were forced to change their half-back line, Bollington reporting himself unfit, and a full-back, Woodward, had to play centre-half.

Southend United left their headquarters at 10.30 yesterday, and reached Exeter shortly after 8 p.m., putting up at the Bude Hotel. They were at the ground in good time this afternoon. The Exeter eleven was as announced, the same team in fact that had played at Cardiff on Saturday. Glorious weather favoured the fixture, and the ground was in perfect condition. The teams were out early, and Rigby had his usual luck with the spin of the coin, with the result that Exeter defended the St James's Road end, the visitors facing strong sunshine. Teams :

An ingenious move by the City left wing resulted in Mitton putting the ball through nicely in front of goal, but Goodwin was whistled up for offside. Southend transferred play, and Strettle and Mitton between them were hustled into giving away a corner. From the clearance Oldacre made rapid progress, and Emblem had to come out to get the ball. By virtue of clever midfield work on the part of Mitton and Lovett, the ball was sent out to Dockray, who got clean through the defence. He dribbled on at a fast pace and took the ball right in, then when everyone was expecting him to pass across to the inside men he scored with a magnificent oblique shot, which gave Emblem no earthly chance. The City thus took the lead within five minutes of the start.

Ten minutes before the interval Dockray again raced through, beating Wileman and Reid in classic style, and tapped the ball about ten yards along the ground to Goodwin, who rounded Marshall and drove deliberately from fifteen yards range, scoring with a shot that nearly shattered the net.

Dockray had been in brilliant form throughout the first half, and he came in for a special ovation as the players went into the dressing-rooms for the half-time breather.

Southend had some hard luck after the change of ends, beating the home defence several times only to find Pym unbeatable. Near the end Oldacre scored Exeter's third goal from Goodwin's pass.
