ANOTHER BIG ATTRACTION:

But Exeter Lose Their Ground Record

Saturday, October 11.

EXETER CITY 0 Q.P.RANGERS 1.

The Rangers left London this morning and arrived at St David's Station at about two o'clock, proceeding straight to the ground. The gates were opened at 1.45 in anticipation of a big attendance. Dull, but dry weather prevailed, and the playing field was in perfect condition.

The Londoners 'team was as announced, but owing to Connor and Lovett both suffering from sprains the Grecians' forward line underwent a big change. Charlie Pratt, the player-trainer, was selected to partner young Charlie Lincoln on the right wing, and Goodwin changed places with Oldacre as an experiment. Rigby led the City team out at 3.27, and they were followed immediately by the Rangers, wearing green and white hooped shirts. A resounding cheer showed that the crowd had noted Rigby's success with the toss, and as usual Exeter defended the near end at the start.

Goodwin nipped in and intercepted Birch right from the kick off, but the Rangers regained the ball and made progress as far as Strettle, who cleared with a long kick. This enabled Goodwin and Doc kray' to put Oldacre through, but the new centre's shot was lacking in strength, and Merrick easily saved. Pressure mounted on the Rangers' goal, however, as Dockray forced the 'keeper to save, and Goodwin charged in just a fraction too late. Dockray then rounded Wingrove and centred to Lincoln, who banged the ball over the bar with a first time shot. Wingrove checked Dockray on the next attempt by the Carlisle man to break through, the ball being sent up to Smith, who made excellent progress but spoiled his otherwise good work by blazing over the bar from a central position.

The game had commenced in lively fashion, with both teams on their mettle. Good play by Lincoln enabled Pratt to test Merrick with a fast oblique shot, which the goalkeeper punched over the bar. Dockray next caused a big thrill by a sparkling dribble along the line at full speed, with Broster at his heels. He transferred the leather to Goodwin, who immediately returned it, and eight of the Queen's Park Rangers team appealed for offside, but the "McCracken" touch had failed them, and following on Dockray's centre an exciting attack developed in which Lincoln all but scored with a lovely "daisy cutter." There was a desperate tussle in front of the visitors' goal but eventually Merrick grabbed the ball and punted it away.

A Simple Goal.

The Rangers came into action again with a burst up the right wing by Donald. He eluded Mitton, and centred, Pym being unable to reach the ball. A melee ensued five yards out, from which Birch tapped the ball into the net. It was a simple goal, although well earned.
The Rangers led by this goal at half-time.

Second Half.

Wingrove cleared off the goal-line with Merrick powerless to stop Lincoln's fast centre, and at the other end Gregory put the ball over the bar from about twenty yards. After ten minutes of play the Rangers lost Broster, who went off suffering from a bad injury to his nose. The accident occurred when the Rangers man attempted to head the ball as Dockray was kicking it.

Exeter made desperate efforts to score, but the ten men of the Rangers were too good for them. The best chance, and the worst miss, came right at the end of the match, when Goodwin was fouled in the penalty area. The Rangers protested, but the penalty was nevertheless given. Goodwin took the kick himself, but directed his shot straight at Merrick, who threw the ball out.

Queen's Park Rangers are the fastest and best balanced side to have played at Exeter this season, and now head the League table.

EXETER CITY v. EAST DEVON

Interesting Match at St. James's Park

Wednesday, October 15.

EXETER CITY 5 EAST DEVON 2.

In bleak, showery weather, at St. James's Park this afternoon, an interesting match was played between an Exeter City eleven and a representative East Devon team selected by the East Devon F. A. Council, the fixture being arranged in aid of funds of the East Devon Association. It had been hoped, originally, that the City would field their full Southern League side, but injuries to the players in recent matches made it imperative for some of them to be rested in view of the important League fixtures to be played in the near future. At 3.30 the following players lined up.

City Reserves

Loram
Potter Chown
Powell Pratt Fisher
Shreeve Croft Barnard Hydon Lincoln

East Devon League Representative Team

Lodge, of L. and S.W.R.

Smith, of St James's
Finn, Royal Horse Artillery

Thompson, Royal Horse Artillery

Glanville, of Friernhay
Davey, of St James's

Hand, of Army Pay Corps
Kemp, of St James's
Dymond, of Tiverton.
Evans, of Torquay Town
Biddick, of Babbacombe

Referee:- Mr B.Taylor, of Exmouth. Linesmen: Messrs T.Curnow and P.OLdacre

The East Devon team appeared a smart company in their green and white striped jerseys. Crad Evans, who has given wonderful service for many years to Plymouth Argyle, Exeter City, Torquay Town, and Babbacombe, captained the amateurs. He won the toss and set the City to face what little sunshine there was in the first half.

Play was in midfield for a while at the start, some lengthy kicking being indulged in by the backs. Potter was conspicuous for checking the Devon forwards as they were coming through in a line, and then a corner fell to the City, Barnard heading wide of the goal. At the other end a mistake by Chown let Hand through until Potter tackled him and effected a good clearance, and the City returned to the attack. Shreeve got the better of Finn, and sent over a nice centre, but Barnard was too slow and was robbed before he could shoot.

Again Shreeve rounded Finn and centred, and Lodge effected a fine save as Croft was in the act of breasting the ball through the goal. Finn got to a cross-drive from Lincoln, but Lodge had to clear from Davey, who headed towards his own goal, and Croft sent the ball over the bar with another header. Shreeve made a swift sprint up the line and finished with an oblique shot, the ball travelling along the crossbar, which just afterwards came in for a "rattling" from Pratt, meeting Lincoln's centre first time.

East Devon Take the Lead.

The visitors now got a look-in, and a goal seemed certain when Evans put Biddick through, but the centre was neatly intercepted by Potter. They came again, however, and this time Kemp swung round smartly twelve yards out and found the net with a curling shot to the top corner. Much heartened by this initial success the Devon backs met the determined onslaught of the City which followed, with comparative equanimity. Glanville was a source of great strength to the East Devon-ites, and he was finely supported by Thompson.

The equaliser came ten minutes from the interval, however. In a strong Exeter raid Lodge punched the leather away with Croft rushing in, and in the melee which followed Barnard found the net with an unstoppable drive. Two minutes later Shreeve beat Lodge with another fierce shot. At the other end Loram saved a dropping shot from Dymond, then Exeter got away again and Pratt cleared the crossbar by about a foot, the ball finishing up in the road outside.

Interval:
Exeter City 2 East Devon 1.

Second Half.

Clever work by Shreeve enabled Barnard to get away, but he was fouled. Kemp intercepted the free-kick but was stopped by Chown. Kemp was not to be outdone, however, and after getting the ball a second time went straight for the objective, evaded Potter, and fairly crashed the ball into the net to equalise the scores.

Barnard should have netted from Shreeve's centre, but missed the ball. He atoned for this, however, shortly afterwards when he headed a pretty goal from Lincoln's centre. Shreeve entertained the crowd with some pretty footwork, and in the closing stages Barnard and Lincoln scored the City's fourth and fifth goals.
