Brighton v City

A WELL DESERVED POINT

Saturday, November 1.

Goldstone Ground, Brighton.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE 0-0 EXETER

There was never a goal at Goldstone Road, yet the game was one of the fastest and most spiritedly contested seen there to date. There were plenty of thrills, and in this respect the crowd of eight thousand had good value for their money.

Brighton: Hayes; Spencer, Pugh; Woodhouse, Booth, Higham; Longstaff, Jones, Miller, Holley, and Best.

Exeter City: Pym; Coleburne, Strettle; Rigby, Popplewell, Mitton; Connor, Makin, Goodwin, Lovett, and Doc kray.

Exeter went "great guns" to begin with, being quick on the ball and playing well together. Their forwards seemed to know just what to do, and they provided Hayes and his backs with the busiest first half they have had at home since professional football was revived after the war.

The City forwards kept the game open, took the shortest route. to goal, and shot hard and often. But happily for the home team Hayes was in tip-top form and gave a dazzling display. All the Exeter forwards shot strongly and accurately, but Hayes simply refused to be beaten. The Brighton forwards, on the other hand, persisted in the close-passing game, which got them nowhere when confronted by Popplewell and company, and very little was seen of George Holley, the old Sunderland international. On the one and only occasion they did get through a brilliant save by Pym pre vented Jones from scoring with an excellent cross-shot.

EXETER CITY V WEST YORKS REGIMENT

Bright Friendly at St. James's Park

Wednesday, November 5.

CITY 5 WEST YORKS REGIMENT 1.

An interesting "friendly" match took place at St. James's Park this afternoon between Exeter City and the West Yorks Regiment eleven from the Taunton district, the object being to give some of the members of the military team a trial. The weather was wet, unfortunately, and there was only a very small attendance.

EXETER CITY
Loram; Coates, and Strettle; Powell, Pratt, and Potter; Collins, Sanders, Oldacre, Shreeve, and Berry.

WEST YORKS
Pte. Harrison;
Pte.Ward, and Pte. Hollingsworth; Pte.Gilham, Pte. Graham, and Pte. Doggrell;
Pte. Armitage, Pte. Keeble, Pte.Mc Donald, Lieut.C.V.Cannar, and Pte. Lovegrove.

Referee: Mr John Dockray, Exeter City F.C.

The game opened slowly, and the soldiers were the first to be come dangerous. Loram saved at close quarters from Armitage, and the next shot, by Mc Donald, was wide. Exeter livened up, and Harrison had to save from Oldacre and Collins. The soldiers attacked again but found Strettle and Coates in reliable form. After fifteen minutes' play Potter put Shreeve in possession, and the ball was driven between the backs for Oldacre to cut through and score with a hard shot at close quarters. A moment later Sanders had a favourable opening, but his shot was kicked away by Hollingsworth. Oldacre cleverly got past two opponents and shot, but the ball was tipped over the bar by Harrison, nothing resulting from the corner. Sanders had been performing particularly well, and he now scored Exeter's second goal with an oblique shot which drove the leather against the far upright and into the net. In the second half Keeble scored for the Regiment, and Oldacre (2) and Shreeve brought the City total to Five.
