Match 23
27th December 1919
Merthyr Town (a)
East Devon Cup
At St James Park
Friernhay v Argyle
Merthyr v City
GRECIANS' THIRD REVERSE IN THREE DAYS
Merthyr Town and the City were both point-hungry today. The Welshmen had experienced hard lines in only drawing at home with Cardiff City on Christmas Day, just as Exeter did in losing the return engagement with the Argyle at St James's Park. The Exeter party reached Merthyr Tydfil before noon, and were at Penydarren Park in good time. The ground lies high up in the Welsh hills, and was being swept by a strong rain-laden wind.
MERTHYR TOWN 2 EXETER CITY 1.
Nock, for Merthyr , and Goodwin, for the City, scored a goal each in the first half, which was undoubtedly Merthyr's, and it was only the excellent display in goal of Pym that kept the register low. Nock, for the home side, was a great success at centre-forward, and has come back to his original position after figuring at inside-right for some time.
Merthyr Town

Referee:- Mr J.Pardoe, of Kidderminster.
Dockray Lovett Goodwin Makin Oldacre Mitton Popplewell Rigby

Exeter City
The Grecians monopolised the play in the second half, and like Merthyr had done earlier, threw away their chances. Oldacre and Makin missed rare opportunities in front of goal, and after Nock had obtained a second point for Merthyr, a miraculous clearance by Gibbon prevented Goodwin from equalising. The result was in doubt up to the end, and both teams tried
hard. Dockray and Oldacre were the best forwards on the field. far as points are concerned. Yet the team never played better The Grecians Christmas programme has been absolutely bare as football than they did yesterday, and today this game was thrown away. Exeter had chances galore, and in the first half alone two priceless openings were missed. Never was there such a game of phases. The first twenty minutes were Merthyr's, then for three quarters of an hour Exeter had absolutely all the play, and very good play it was. Merthyr improved after they had taken the lead for the second time.
EAST DEVON CUP.
In the absence of the Grecians at Merthyr, and with no match for the Reserves, the East Devon Cup match between Exeter Argyle and Friernhay was played at St James's Park today.
After an even first half Friernhay won easily by five clear goals, scored by Addicott, G.Fenwick 2, Bowers, and Hill.
Friernhay:
Wills; Preston, R. Fenwick; Pyne, Glanville, Pim; Dingle, Bowers, Addicott, G. Fenwick, and Hill.
Argyle:
Thorogood; Hearn, Millman; Cullen, Jennings, Ash; Please, Osborne, Potter, Dovell, and Hicks.
