GRECIANS FAIL TO GET INTO THEIR STRIDE
Luton's First Home Victory Since October
Played at Dunstable Road.
Saturday, January 17. miertes
LUTON TOWN 3 EXETER CITY 1.
The Grecians reached Luton half an hour before the start of the match, after seven hours of railway travel. The ground looked sticky, but otherwise in good order, and the weather was fair.
Exeter City, led by Jimmy Rigby, were first out, receiving a warm welcome from a small but enthusiastic band of Devonians from London, who had come over to the Bedfordshire town for the match. The Lutonians met with a great ovation, doubtless in consequence of their beating Coventry City in the Cup last week.

Elvey won the toss, but this carried no advantage. The match was started by Goodwin, who passed to Lovett, and a move on the Exeter right was halted by Dunn, from whose clearance Hoar made progress on the opposite side until he was stopped by Coleburne. Luton returned to the attack and forced a corner, which was sent across well by Hoar, but Lovett headed the ball out of danger. A vigorous game ensued, and after Popplewell had prevented a certain goal by getting in the way of a shot from Simms, the ball went over the line for a corner. From the resultant kick, taken by Hoar, Simms gathered the ball in his stride and rammed it into the bottom corner of the net, giving Pym absolutely no chance. At
the interval Luton were leading by this goal, and so far Exeter had seemed listless, and had quite failed to get into anything like their usual stride, despite the fact that they were playing against ten men, Roe having gone off following a collision with Mitton.
The "Strawplaiters" resumed without Roe, and played the one back game, Dunn moving up, and Goodwin was bowled over by Elvey on the edge of the penalty area, then headed clear from Rigby's free kick. After thirteen minutes Henderson equalised, although the credit for the goal belongs to Dockray. The City winger beat Elvey for pace, and having drawn the defence out of position he passed to Henderson, who cracked the ball into the net.
Fifteen minutes from time, just when Exeter were beginning to look the better side Simms scored out of a general scrimmage in front of goal, and seven minutes later Simms, on the left wing, worked himself clear of the defence and crossed to Bookman. The outside-left shot hard against the far upright, and the leather glanced into the net. It was Luton's first win at home since they beat Portsmouth on October 25.
CITY RESERVES v BABBACOMBE.
Plymouth and District League.
The weather was fine, and although the ground has been churned up by the recent heavy rain, this did not prevent good football being played on it. Babbacombe won the toss, and placed the City Reserves towards the Exeter end.

BABBACOMBE
Nothing was scored until a few minutes before half-time, then Sanders back-heeled the ball into the Babbacombe net following a hectic scrimmage on the goal-line. Townsend equalised, Jackman providing him with the opening. Green was kicked on the foot, and had to retire. Even with ten men the Reserves had matters their own way in the second half, and further goals were added, first by Connor, then by Makin and Sanders.
