EXETER CITY V CARDIFF CITY

Exciting Contest Ends in a Draw

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 14.

EXETER CITY 1 CARDIFF CITY 1.

The afternoon was dull, but dry and warm, and the field was in perfect order. Cardiff City were first out, receiving a cordial greeting, and quickly followed by the Grecians, led by Pym. The goalkeeper captain was warmly cheered, in recognition of his having been chosen to play for the Southern League, an honour richly deserved, as every Exeter supporter will agree.

This match, the "tit-bit" of the Exeter programme, attracted fully eight thousand spectators. The game opened at a fast pace, and the Cardiff forwards, well supported by Hardy, were early on the attack. Pym, however, was safe, bringing off fine clearances from Clarke, Cashmore, and Beare.

Five minutes from the start Cardiff opened their scoring acc ount. Beare, who worked close up to the Exeter line, sent over a wide pass, and Clarke ran on to the ball and put it in the net well out of Pym's reach. Exeter opened out the game, and their long, swinging passes puzzled the defence, but sterling work by Hardy, Smith, Stewart, and Brittan saved the situation.

Fifteen minutes after Cardiff's goal, however, the Grecians equalised. Dockray went off on a fast sprint down the touchline, and cleverly drawing out the defence passed inside for Goodwin to beat Kneeshaw from about six yards' range. Cashmore scored for Cardiff after the interval, but the referee's whistle had already blown for offside.
