GRECIANS BEATEN AFTER A HARD CONTEST:

Saturday, March 6,1920
at The Den, New Cross, London.

MILLWALL ATHLETIC 1 EXETER CITY O.

The Cup-ties were all the rage in London today, but the Millwall people did not feel unduly pessimistic as to the "gate" prospects of their match with Exeter City at The Den. The Grecians are a popular team in London, and the majority of people who could not get away from business would not wish to be left in the overflow at White Hart Lane and Stamford Bridge.

The weather was pleasantly mild, with a light breeze sweeping the ground from goal to goal, and the crowd was in excess of twelve thousand.

Rigby won the toss, and the City had the advantage of whatever wind there was in the opening half. Pym, for some reason, had put on his red jersey, but this was not allowed, and the kick-off was delayed while he covered it with a white one. Pretty passing by Buck and Noble resulted in Dempsey getting an opening, but he was offside.

Exeter came away in dashing style through Dockray, and Wood has to clear from Lovett. The next incident of note was a clever pass from Tainsh to Broad, who bowled Strettle over with a hefty shoulder charge as he gathered the ball. He was challenged then by Pym, who was also charged over, but the leather rolled over the goal line, out of play. Broad again secured possession, and shot very hard, but Pym caught the ball safely, and cleared. The feature of the next few minutes' play was a series of long passes Broad, and from one of these the Millwall sharpshooter hit the foot of the upright with great force, and Strettle kicked clear.

Pym won a tremendous round of applause for a marvellous save just afterwards, Broad once more trying his luck. Coleburne and Strettle both missed a long kick out from Woodley and Broad, who dashed forward in pursuit, looked certain to score. But Exeter's celebrated goalkeeper sprinted out and fell on the ball just as Broad reached it, Pym's timing being absolutely perfect. Hodge came in and tried to get the ball, but failed, Pym regaining his feet still in possession.

A free kick to Exeter enabled Mitton to place the ball well for Dockray, but Wood came out and met the centre and punch out of danger. It began to pour with rain, but the exchanges on the field continued to be fast and furious, and Pym won round of applause for his saves from Broad and Buck. a. further

Broad won the game for his side in the second half from the penalty spot, this being the only shot that Pym failed to stop.

Plymouth and District League
CITY RESERVES v TORQUAY TOWN.

Torquay Town provided the opposition at St James's Park this afternoon in a Plymouth and District League match. The Reserves turned out in green and white jerseys, and Torquay wore red jerseys with black collars. The teams were :

Reserves:- Roach; Twooze, Chown; Crawshaw, Powell, Perry; Connor, Gill, Collins, Green, and Lincoln.

Torquay:- Gartrell; Bovey, Downing; Saunders, Drew, Dixon; Ford (M), Ford (H), Meager, Pridham, and Lambert.

Powell scored for Exeter, and M.Ford for the Town. A penalty was given against Downing for handling, but Lincoln put the ball over the bar from the spot-kick. Powell and Chown (penalty kick) scored for the Reserves in the second half,
Exeter thus winning by three goals to one.

Exhibition match at Sidmouth
THURSDAY, MARCH 11.

A capital exhibition match was played at the Coburg Ground, Sidmouth, this afternoon, between Exeter City and a local team. The Grecians took a strong side, including most of the Southern Leaguers, but Pym and Dockray could not appear, as they were at Shepherd's Bush, London, playing for the Southern League Eleven against Cambridge University. The Sidmouth defence put up a stubborn resistance to the repeated attacks of the City forwards
in the first twenty minutes, and during this period their goal could not be pierced. Gill, however, then performed the "hat trick" inside of ten minutes, two of his goals being scored with neat shots at close range, while the last was headed in. Wattley, the Sidmouth custodian, had absolutely no chance with any. Wattley made several excellent saves in the next few minutes, but was beaten by Makin, with a strong header, while just before half-time Connor scored Exeter's fifth with a good shot.

Gill put Exeter further ahead soon after the resumption, but Bartlett (Sidmouth) aroused great enthusiasm by beating Loram with a good shot five minutes later. Heyman deserved a better fate with a fine shot which was charged down by Twooze.

The Sidmouth forwards were dangerous in sudden rushes, Wallis and Winter both being conspicuous with good efforts. At the other end Wattley saved several stinging shots, but was finally beaten by Gill, and then by Makin, this last goal being scored after a shot by Gill had struck the crossbar.

Final score:
Exeter City 8 Sidmouth 1.

Exeter City team:
Loram; Twooze and Strettle; Rigby, Mitton, and Crawshaw; Oldacre, Makin, Gill, Lovett, and Connor.
