Newport v City

EXETER CRASH AT SOMERTON PARK

Saturday, March 20.

NEWPORT COUNTY 4 EXETER CITY 1.

Exeter City supporters felt that the team had a little account to square with Newport County this afternoon. The Monmouthshire men caused a sensation when they took advantage of two out of three penalties to beat Exeter at St James's Park in November, then the teams met again in the last qualifying round of the Cup, and the County won on their merits by the only goal scored. The Ironsides are still not very far removed from the bottom of the League, and their record gives plenty of evidence of the club's erratic form.

Goodwin was the victim of influenza this morning, and it was decided to give Gill a trial at centre-forward. Glorious weather favoured the match, and the ground was in excellent order.

Rigby won the toss, and Devlin kicked off for Newport facing glaring sun. After a shot from Dobson had skimmed across the a front of Exeter's goal the City got away, a clearance by Griffin hit Gill's legs, and the ball was only prevented from entering the net through the quickness of Cooper, who cleared upfield. Pym saved at full length from Mann, who had sent in a curling shot from twenty yards. Lovett, receiving from Oldacre, should have scored in the next minute when he shot wide with only Cooper to beat. Newport eventually got away again, and Pym saved finely from Devlin. Dockray sprinted past Collins and Griffin, but with inexplicably turned the ball wide of the posts. End to end play only Cooper in front of him and about ten yards from the goal he followed, Exeter having more than a half share of the game, and their efforts were rewarded when Dockray atoned for his earlier mistake. He gathered a long ground pass from Lovett, and shooting from the touch-line with his left foot beat Cooper all the way, the ball flying into the net over the goalkeeper's head. Cooper appeared to have been troubled by the glare of the sun in his eyes. Just afterwards, however, the Newport goalkeeper brought off a brilliant save from Makin, and at the other end Pym did equally well from Savage.
Exeter pressed until the interval, and when the whistle blew the score was: City 1 Newport nil.

Exeter lost Rigby, injured, in the second half, and the game underwent a complete transformation. The defence went to pieces, and Devlin, who has troubled Exeter City on previous occasions, scored four goals for Newport County.

CITY RESERVES v K.O.S.B.

The 2nd King's Own Scottish Borderers visited St James's Park this afternoon, where they were opposed to the City Reserves in a Plymouth and District League match. The Reserves have kept on steadily winning their matches in the League, and are third in the table with 23 points, Plymouth Argyle Reserves being first, and Royal Naval Barracks second.

Loram reappeared in goal for the Reserves, having recovered from his recent illness. He won the toss, and elected to defend the St James's Road. McGlinchey started the game for K.O.S.B., facing strong sunshine.

The Reserves received a fine chance with Lincoln in a speedy run on the left wing. He eluded Hunter and aimed for goal, but the ball travelled outside. Green, in another attack, rammed the ball into the net as Anderson came out, but offside was given. Connor scored for Exeter, and McGlinchey for the soldiers.

Green gave Exeter the lead early in the second half, and made victory certain with another goal near the end. Chown missed the goal from a penalty, awarded for a foul on Green.
