NORTHAMPTON TOWN 3 EXETER CITY 1

There was a steady rain all the morning at Northampton, and it was still coming down when the teams appeared on the field, the time then being 3.25 o'clock. Pym lost the toss, and Northampton were repulsed by Strettle in their first advance, but a further raid was instigated by Lockett, who gave Freeman an opening. The ball duly got returned to the centre, and Coleburne injured his knee in tackling the burly Lockett, but resumed after attention, and the play veered to the other end where Thorpe saved finely from Goodwin. Thorpe also cleared a drive from Popplewell, who received the ball from Crawshaw's throw-in from touch.

Twenty-five minutes from the start the Cobblers scored. They came away on the left through Freeman, who swung the ball across to Pease. The outside-right shot first-time, and although Pym was in position to fist the ball out, it went straight up in the air and dropped at the feet of the onrushing Lockett, who banged it into the goal from about six yards. Whitworth scored a second goal for the Cobblers, and after the change of ends both sides scored once, Thomas for Northampton and Oldacre for Exeter.

EXETER CITY RESERVES v 3RD DEVONS

In the absence of the Chiefs, at Northampton, the Reserves met the 3rd Devons at St James's Park this afternoon, in a "friendly" encounter.

Hetherington, of the Royal Horse Artillery, was given another trial in the City team. He was at centre-forward, and Gill, the recent signing from Bury, appeared on the right wing.

3RD DEVONS

In the first five minutes the Reserves were awarded a penalty, hands being given against Parker. Powell took the resultant kick and scored with a fierce drive. Chances in front of goal, which should have brought a reward, were missed in turn by Collins and Sanders. The Devons attacked, and Barnard provided a nice pass to Taylor, who beat Loram from twelve yards.

A good individual effort by Hetherington resulted in the ball going wide, and in a second break-through he passed to Connor, whose centre was cleared. Further goals accrued to both sides, the final score being:

City Reserves 7, Devon Regiment 3.
