EXETER CITY DEFEAT BRISTOL ROVERS

Big Crowd at St. James's Park

Monday, April 5.

EXETER CITY 2 BRISTOL ROVERS 1.

Bristol Rovers, who defeated the City by four goals to two at Stapleton Road on Good Friday, provided the opposition today in the last holiday match of the season. Bristol Rovers went under to the tune of two - nil at Plymouth on Saturday, whilst Exeter were being beaten at Northampton. Despite the losses, the City were welcomed enthusiastically by a big holiday crowd of over eleven thousand, a record for the ground. The weather was ideal. Exeter wore claret and amber jerseys instead of the usual red and white. Ellis Crompton, the Rovers' skipper, and a popular "ex Grecian," won the toss and set the Citizens to face a strong sun.

Despite the handicap of facing the sun, the Grecians obtained an almost complete mastery during the first half, and in spite of the skill of Crompton and his colleagues, their clever play in midfield won the forwards many excellent openings. Two goals only resulted therefrom, however, the first being obtained by Makin after eight minutes play, and the second by Goodwin just eight between the backs and shot. Pym dashed out and intercepted the minutes later. In the last few minutes of the game Palmer raced ball, which flew skywards, and as the leather descended Simms headed it into the gaping goal.

CITY RESERVES DEFEAT ROYAL NAVAL BARRACKS

Wednesday, April 7.

Played at St James's Park, Exeter.

CITY RESERVES 4 ROYAL NAVAL BARRACKS 2.

Exeter City Reserves were opposed by the Royal Naval Barracks in a Plymouth and District League match at St James's Park this afternoon. The ground was soft after the rain of the morning, but the weather cleared in time for the match, and there was a good attendance. The teams lined up as follows:

EXETER CITY RESERVES
Loram
Twooze Strettle
Crawshaw Popplewell Perry
Gill Sanders Izzard Chown Connor

ROYAL NAVAL BARRACKS

Glynn Richards Henning Champion Vivian
Burch Paltridge Ware.
Duffin Rice
Mitch

Exeter had the better of the exchanges, but the forwards were lacking in combination and unable to drive home their attacks.

When play had been in progress for a quarter of an hour Glynn broke through, and closing in towards the goal, beat Loram with a rising shot. The equaliser was not long in coming, for three or four minutes later Mitch failed to clear properly from Sanders, and Gill netted the ball from a difficult angle. Exeter continued the more aggressive side, but the Barracks again took the lead before the interval, Richards scoring from Ware's centre.

Half-time:
City Reserves 1 Royal Naval Barracks 2.

The City played more forceful football after the teams changed over, and ten minutes from the restart their efforts were rewarded, a fine shot by Popplewell from twenty yards drawing the scores level.

Richards missed an open goal, while Henning shot straight at Loram when presented with a similar chance. Ten minutes from the finish Gill was fouled in the penalty area and Popplewell scored from the spot kick, whilst five minutes later, from by far the best combined movement of the match Chown secured the Reserves' fourth goal. Glynn then had hard lines in seeing his excellent shot strike the crossbar and rebound into play. Broken Collar-bone.

Alf Green, who played at inside left in the match at Bristol on Good Friday, and was injured in the second half of the game by colliding violently with Stansfield, the Rovers' goalkeeper, is suffering from a broken collar-bone.

He did not take his injury very seriously until Saturday, and played at Northampton, although he did go on the right wing, as it was felt that he was not quite fit. The extent of the injury was not realised until the team got back to Exeter. Stansfield, the goalkeeper, was also injured in the collision, and has not played since the occurrence.
