EXETER CITY FOOTBALL CLUB: SEASON 1919-20
Southern League Outlook
East Devon Football
The Exeter City players reported for strict training in the second week of August under the direction of Mr. Arthur Chadwick, who has the assistance of Charlie Pratt in this connection. Pratt came to Exeter from Everton in 1910 and gave brilliant service to the Grecians in the pre-war days. Although the list of players engaged this summer is not as long as those of most Southern League clubs, it will be found, on examination, to compare very favourably with the others. It differs from many in that it footballers who are in their prime. contains only
The prospects of the City in the Southern League appear to be distinctly rosy, the new men having linked up with those retained from 1915 in the happiest possible fashion, and the whole seems to constitute just the right blend. There are some changes in the Southern League itself this season; to begin with it now contains the maximum number of clubs permitted, i.e., 22.
West Ham United has, after all, joined the Football League, and Croydon Common has been wound up. The five vacancies thus created have been filled by the re-election of Gillingham, and the promotion from the Second Division of Brentford, Merthyr, Swansea, and Newport County.
In consequence of the application by Exeter City Reserves for membership of the East Devon League, the League resolved to retain their bye-law, viz., "that no professional player be allowed to sign on or play for any club in the League." It was the intention of the City to continue in the Plymouth and District League, but to run a second reserve team in the East Devon League. As regards the ground, St James's Park is once again assuming smart appearance, and will be ready in good time for the practice its matches, on August 16th and 23rd. The directors have under consideration the erection of a covered stand for about 5,000 people, on the popular side.
Exeter City Players
It is a matter of deep regret that so many of Exeter's players were permanently lost as the result of the war, and in fact, there is probably no other club in the whole of the country whose losses have exceeded those of Exeter City. Clarke, Evans, Harding, Hunt, and White all gave their lives, while F.Goodwin, Marshall and Smith were wounded so seriously that they will never again play football. Nine of the pre-war men are retained, namely Loram and Pym, goal; Strettle, back; Rigby and Pratt, half backs; Dockray, W.Goodwin, Green, and Lovett, forwards. Green is still serving with the army in India.
New players:-
