A product of Ayrshire junior football goalkeeper James Campbell played for Exeter City during 1928/29. He joined the club from Partick Thistle.
A native of the Ayrshire town of Dalry, James started his career with Springside Thistle and then appeared for Irvine Meadow before gaining Scottish League experience with Partick Thistle whom he joined for the start of the 1926/27 season.
Arriving at Exeter City for the 1928/29 campaign, James competed for the goalkeeping place in the first-team with Tom Holland. After making his debut against Brentford in the opening game, he featured in the first ten games of the season but didn't appear after mid-February and was released at the end of the season.
