Millwall Athletic (a)
Wednesday 2nd September
SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
MILLWALL ATHLETIC v. EXETER CITY.
The initial appearance of the Exeter City team on the Millwall ground was productive of a considerable amount of interest. It was unfortunate that the weather conditions were not more favourable, a sharp downpour within a short time of the start drenching the players, and rendering the turf slippery and treacherous. Despite these drawbacks, however, a fairly good game was seen by between two and three thousand spectators. The interest was maintained to the end, as it was within a few minutes of the final whistle that Exeter made the result a draw. Teams:
MILLWALL:
Joyce
Archer Stevenson
Frost Comrie Blythe
Dean Cunliffe Twigg Hunter Tellum
Referee:- Mr T. Garner.
White Bell McGuigan Watson Parnell
Wake Johnson Ambler
Bulcock Craig
Fletcher
EXETER CITY:
Millwall showed plenty of dash at the outset, and Fletcher was early called upon. The Exeter custodian showed himself equal to the occasion, saving in fine style. Breaking away on the left, White was prominent, and sending the ball across, gave McGuigan a chance. The home defence, however, proved effective, and play was transferred to the visitors' half.
From some fast play Dean got on the ball, and passing to Cunliffe, the last named, with a low shot, opened the scoring for the home side. This occurred after 10 minutes' play. The slippery turf spoiled the play to a great extent, while the wind and the rain were against the Exeter men. Still they persevered, White almost scoring with a shot close in, and Bell and McGuigan, combining well, kept Joyce and his backs busy. Hunter had bad luck more than once, Dean also doing good work, but nothing more was scored up to the interval.
The surroundings were better in the second half, and Exeter played up well, and kept Millwall on the defensive. Bell was always prominent, while Johnson and Ambler put in some useful work, but the home defence prevailed, and after about fifteen minutes' play Hunter, taking the ball from Tellum, scored a second goal for Millwall.
Nothing further was scored until the last ten minutes, when Bell scored for Exeter after a rebound from Ambler's shot, and keeping up the pace, Bell, a few minutes from the finish, added a second point with a fine shot, and thus made a draw of two goals each.
Result:-
Millwall 2, Exeter City 2.
