Match 03

Watford (a)

Friendly
City Reserves v Torpoint

Saturday, September 12th.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
WATFORD v. EXETER CITY.

At Cassio Road, Watford, before 4,000 people, the home side won by 3-1. It was not a good game, and Watford won not through any superior combination or skill, but because they had a real sharp-shooting centre forward in Harry Smith. The weather was beautifully fine, and the turf in excellent condition. Teams:

WATFORD:

Biggar;
Lockett, Betts;
Fyfe, Fayers, Richardson;
Riddell, Maclaine, Smith, Hubbard, and Furr.

EXETER CITY:

Fletcher;
Craig, Bulcock;
Ambler, Johnson, Wake;
Parnell, Watson, McGuigan, Bell, and White.

Referee:- Mr. H. R. Child, London.

The first half was characterised by too much vigorous play, and free kicks and stoppages were numerous. After 20 minutes Furr slipped past Bulcock, and passed towards Hubbard, who shouldered off Ambler and drove in an oblique shot which Fletcher was quite powerless to touch.

Parnell left Richardson behind in a sprint and centred with admirable judgment, leaving Bell nothing to do but to tap the ball into the net.

Half-time, 1-1.

Maclaine, who had gone off injured in the last ten minutes of the opening half, resumed, and it was a bit of cool calculation by him that gave Smith his chance to put the ball smartly into the Exeter net. The City then rallied, and for a time were all over Watford; they attacked without intermission for 15 minutes, but the home backs gave no quarter, and behind them Biggar was equal to all demands.

Smith careered do the left wing, and just as he was tackled by Craig shot with force, the ball going into the net just under the crossbar. Exeter attacked again in the closing stages, but without any one of Smith's calibre in the forward line, just could not save the game. White was the only weak link in the Exeter vanguard, being too inexperienced to beat Fyfe and Lockett. Ambler and Fletcher were the best of the Exeter players, and Smith and Hubbard were outstanding forwards for Watford. Cleaver, McKinley, and Kelly were all absent from the West Hertfordshire team due to injuries, but they were scarcely missed.

RESULT:
WATFORD 3 , EXETER CITY 1 .

Friendly

At St. James's Park, Exeter Reserves were beaten 3-1 by Torpoint in a "friendly" match.
