Plymouth and District League
Torpoint (a)
Saturday, September 19th.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
EXETER CITY V. NORWICH CITY.
Arthur Chadwick made his first appearance for the City against Norwich, at St. James's Park, where a crowd of 5,000 welcomed the teams out in perfect weather, with the ground looking in splendid condition. Copestake was also playing his first game in the City colours, having recovered from the injury he sustained in the Practice Match on August 29th.
The visitors, in blue and white, had two new forwards in Silor, ex-Leyton, and Tomlinson, ex-Brentford. They had made a poor start to the season, having lost to Luton Town by 4-0 and to Swindon Town by 10-2. Rayner and Porter were deputising for McEwan and Smith, both injured.
Teams :
EXETER CITY:
Fletcher;
Craig, Bulcock;
Ambler, Chadwick, Wake;
Parnell, Watson, McGuigan, Bell, Copestake.
NORWICH CITY: -
Roney;
Newlands, Rayner;
Livingstone, Tomlinson, Whiteman;
Coxhead, Flanagan, Porter, Silor, Allsopp.
Exeter were quickly off the mark, and McGuigan, taking full advantage of a mistake by Roney, scored with ease to put the local crowd in a good humour. Then Chadwick converted a penalty kick, awarded for a foul on McGuigan, and Bell slipped between the backs five minutes later and scored Exeter's third goal with a fierce volley. Norwich were badly let down by their backs, who were all at sea and could do little right. However, they pulled themselves together, and their forwards, who had played well with limited chances, began to move in dangerous fashion. Shortly before the interval Silor scored a good goal for them.
Half-time: City 3 Norwich 1
Early in the second half Exeter forced three corners, and from one of them Roney was lucky to clear his lines. But Exeter were taken off their guard following this incident, for Porter got the ball and dashed forward to the half-way line, passed to Silor, who was on the right wing, and the latter dribbled through to reduce the lead to one goal.
Bell got the ball into the net, but the referee disallowed the point for an infringement. Exeter City's pace had slackened off noticeably in the last part of the game, and Norwich finished the stronger team, with Silor continually troubling the home defence. However, Fletcher was a very capable goalkeeper, and played his best game since joining Exeter.
Result:
EXETER CITY 3, NORWICH CITY 2.
PLYMOUTH LEAGUE:
TORPOINT v CITY RESERVES.
Showing improved form to that of last week, the Reserves had a comfortable victory over Torpoint, at Plainmoor, Torquay, by two goals to nothing.
Pridham scored both goals, one in each half, the second being obtained after a shot from Drain had rebounded off the goalpost. Singlehurst was injured in the second half, but very pluckily remained on the field.
