Exeter Reserves v Yeovil

Saturday, September 26th.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE
READING v. EXETER CITY.

There were 7,000 spectators at this match at the Elm Park ground of the Reading club, played in pleasant weather and on a good turf. It was pretty generally anticipated that the home side would gain the spoils, they having so far remained undefeated in the Southern League this season.

On this afternoon's play, however, they were decidedly the inferior of the Exeter team, who won deservedly by two goals to one.

THE CITY'S SPLENDID VICTORY:

There was never any doubt about Exeter City's superiority to their hosts, and they achieved a splendid victory, their first away from St. James's Park. Chadwick was always in the picture, his skill and experience being too much for Reading. Copestake was a big improvement on White at outside-left, and both goals were scored from his corner-kicks.

Newbigging saved Reading from a heavier defeat, and had Exeter won by three clear goals they would have been deserved. The City kicked off against the sun, nevertheless they were the first to settle down, a fine run on the part of Bell nearly enabling the Exonians to score. Wilkes cleared his lines in the nick of time. Then, for a short while, Reading were aggressive, but combination was badly lacking, and the Exeter defenders did not experience any great difficulty in keeping the home forwards out.

Strenuous work by McGuigan, Bell, and Watson led to a very determined onslaught on the home fortress, and Reading, to save the situation, had to concede a corner. The ball was expertly placed by Copestake, and Bell scored from the winger's centre. This was after 25 minutes' play. The City well deserved their lead, which was held until a minute before half-time, when Burch equalised from a pass by Mainds, very much against the run of the play. Half-time: Reading 1 Exeter City 1.

During the opening few minutes of the second half the exchanges favoured the locals, and once, from an excellent position right in front of goal, Wheat croft nearly placed Reading ahead. Fletcher was, however, very safe between the posts, and the danger was averted.

Then the play veered round again all in favour of Exeter, for whom the veteran international, Chadwick, was in brilliant form. Despite all that the Reading defenders could do, they could not keep the Grecians out, and Watson placed them in front following another well taken corner by Copestake. A little later Parnell nearly added to Exeter's lead, but in

the closing stages the home side made great efforts to get on terms, Fletcher being called on to save again from Wheat croft. The City held on to their lead, and in addition to winning by two goals to one had the satisfaction of being the first club to overthrow Reading in the Southern League this season.
