Match 13
24th October 1908
Brighton & Hove (a)

City Reserves 2 St.Luke's College 0.

Saturday, October 24th.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
BRIGHTON AND HOVE v. EXETER CITY
.

Between six and seven thousand spectators witnessed the game at the Goldstone Ground, Old Shoreham Road, Hove, where Exeter City were the visitors.

The Albion had a weak half-back line owing to the absence of Booth and Wilson, and it was in this department that they were badly let down.

Exeter were easily the better side in the first half, and scored twice through McGuigan, (photo), who played a fine forceful game at centre-forward. After five minutes' play a perfectly placed corner by Copestake enabled McGuigan to steer the ball into the net, and a dribble and pass by Watson gave the City leader an easy opening for his second goal. Although no further scoring was done before the interval the Brighton goal had several narrow escapes.

Half-time: City 2  Brighton 0.

Brighton were a greatly improved side after the interval, and had three-quarters of the play, but their forwards were not convincing in front of goal. Nearly at the end Martin tapped through a model centre by Jee.

Final score:-
Exeter City 2, Brighton and Hove Albion 1.

Exeter City's victory was a surprise, but thoroughly deserved on the run of the play. In the first half, particularly, there was no comparison between the teams, and Exeter, despite facing a strong wind, were much the superior side. The forwards kept the ball on the floor, and were acknowledged to be the best quintette seen at the Brighton ground this season.

BRIGHTON:- Whiting; Turner, Stewart; Leeming, Morris, Atkinson; Brennan, Longstaff, Martin, Crump, Jee.

EXETER:- Fletcher; Craig, Bulcock; Ambler, Chadwick, Johnson; White, Watson, McGuigan, Bell, Copestake.

Because of their cup-ties Exeter City have played fewer games in the Southern League than most of the other clubs. They are now 13th in the table, with 8 points, having won three times, drawn twice, and lost four times.

At St. James's Park:
City Reserves 2 St.Luke's College 0.

A minute before half-time Eveleigh forced a corner off one of the College backs. When the ball was centred Pridham missed, but Badcock came in behind him and scored. Half-time 1-0. Badcock scored the second goal, forcing the ball into the net from a scrimmage almost on the goal-line.

RESERVES: Sturge; Fenwick, E. Wells; Tierney, Mudd, Letheren; Eveleigh, Pridham, Turner, Drain, Badcock.

ST. LUKE'S:- Loveless; Page, Jenkins; Nicholson, Forster, Plant; Hallows, Symons, Sadler, Bowmer, Mackenzie.
