Crystal Palace (h)

St Austell v City Reserves

Saturday, October 31st.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
EXETER CITY v. CRYSTAL PALACE.

The visit of Crystal Palace aroused the keenest interest in Devon, and a record crowd of over 10,000 was present at the start of the match, played in moderately fine weather at St. James's
Park. The Palace suffered two alterations through injuries, losing Lawrence from the forwards, and Collins from the half-backs, and the City were without their mainstay, Chadwick.

EXETER CITY:
Fletcher
Craig Bulcock Ambler Johnson Wake
White Watson McGuigan Bell Copestake

Referee: Mr. J.B. Brodie, Stafford.

Woodger Bauchop McGibbon Swann Garratt
Brearley Ryan Innard
Needham Collyer

CRYSTAL PALACE

Exeter were away with a burst at the start, with the forwards pressing hotly time after time, thanks largely to the excellent form of White, the reserve winger. McGuigan, however, was not as happy in the centre, and spoiled several promising positions.

The Palace had put in several attacks of minor importance when the home forwards got right away on the outside of the field, and from White's centre, close to the goal, Bell scored with a shot that no goalkeeper could have saved.

Exeter had the better of it until the interval, but without producing a second goal.

Half-time: City 1 Palace nil.

Crystal Palace turned the tables very soon in the second half, for after a few minutes' even play, their forwards accomplished a lot of warm work, attacking with vigour and more precision than the City had done. They experienced some hard lines before their centre-forward, McGibbon, at last brought the score to one-all, converting a capital centre by Woodger.

Following quiet and even play, the City forwards came along with a dashing attack, but luck was not their way, and Needham and Collyer were hard to pass. The grand attack fizzled out, and
less spirited play both 'keepers were called upon, but never pressed. The Palace should have closed the game with a score, for they were well on top in the last few minutes, but Woodger and Swann both missed when given easy chances.

It was a game of two distinct parts, for whilst the City had matters all their own way in the first half, and scored once, the Palace dominated the second half, and especially the last fifteen minutes, and they scored once.

Exeter's trouble was too much finesse, and too little dash. The forwards dallied with the ball until the Palace defence crowded them out, whereas the visitors played a fast, energetic type of game, and swung the ball about from wing to wing. Innard, Woodger, and Bauchop were always prominent in the
Crystal Palace team, while Bulcock, in defence, and White, among the forwards, were Exeter's best.

Result
EXETER CITY, 1, CRYSTAL PALACE, 1.

FRIENDLY:
ST. AUSTELL v CITY RESERVES.

Exeter played classy football at the St. Austell ground, and were a far superior combination. They should have had more goals than the three they scored.

St. Austell were weak in shooting, and suffered their first defeat of the season. Drain scored twice in the first half, and interval.

Singlehurst added a third after the interval.

Result:
City Reserves 3, St. Austell nil.
