Saturday, November 7th.
English Cup, third round (qualifying):
EXETER CITY V WHITEHEADS (WEYMOUTH)
Exeter City were engaged again today in the Cup, preliminary competition. Having previously defeated Weymouth by 14 goals to nil, and Longfleet 10-1 (after a 1-1 draw) they were next pitted against Whiteheads, the Dorset amateur team run in connection with the torpedo works near Weymouth.
The counter attraction at St. Thomas's, the match between Devon and Gloucester in the Rugby Union County Championship, as was only to be expected, greatly affected the "gate", and there were only about 3,000 present.

WHITEHEADS:
The visitors have, in previous years, done as well as any amateur team in the English Cup competition, to say nothing of their consistent successes in the English Amateur Cup and the Dorset Leagues and Cups. Because of this Exeter City decided to field their strongest available side, and in consequence Arthur Chadwick resumed his place at centre-half, while Johnson was once more at left-half.
This season the amateurs have played six matches, and won them all. The only alteration they made in their team was Cockings for Derrick at inside-left. This position is generally filled by Brocklehurst, who was put at centre-half at Exeter in the place of Barron, a Scot, who could not turn out.
Exeter City won the toss, and Whiteheads, looking spic and span in their bright red, set the ball in motion, playing away from the City end. The Grecians at once attacked, and forced two corners, from the second of which Bell attempted to head in. A goal looked certain, but Kilby effected a great save, whereupon McGuigan, jumping up at the ball again, put it just wide. Exeter continued to attack, and White was tripped in the penalty area. Chadwick took the kick, and sent the ball in with great force. Kilby stopped the shot but could not hold the ball, and Chadwick rammed the ball home for the first goal.
Play remained mainly in Exeter's favour, but Whiteheads stuck to their task doggedly, and Kilby saved from White with great dexterity. The visitors came into the game more, and Lepetit put in a good shot from the left wing, which Fletcher saved. Just after this the City forwards got away in a line, and Watson put the ball into the far corner of the net for the second goal. This happened a quarter of an hour after the start, and seemed to have effectually settled Whiteheads' fate. The City forwards tried shots from all manner of distances and angles, Bell, Watson, Johnson, White, and Chadwick, all having a go.
OUT OF THE GROUND
Once Chadwick, amid laughter, put the ball right out of the ground into St. James's Road. Five minutes later he received the ball from Bell and passed to McGuigan, who fastened on to it, and swinging round, put in an unstoppable shot in his best style, Kilby having no earthly chance. Shots by Copestake and Johnson were followed by Bell heading over the bar, and with the City doing all the attacking the Reds rarely got over the half-way line. Martin, however, made a sparkling run for the amateurs, aided by Cockings, but the final shot was weak, and easily saved by Fletcher, who so far had had very little to do.
Then, back again at the other end Watson booted in the fourth goal following a corner.
Half-time 4-nil.
After Porter had tested Fletcher with a good shot, play was rapidly transferred to the other end, and Bell scored, only for the goal to be disallowed on account of an infringement having taken place before the shot was made.
Midway through this half Whiteheads forced their first corner, which was easily cleared, but the visiting forwards had another chance just afterwards, and with a little steadiness might have scored. Attack after attack by the City led to no tangible result, though one shot by McGuigan only just missed, with the goalkeeper plainly beaten.
Exeter had one narrow escape when Bulcock cleared off the line with Fletcher out of his goal, and then McGuigan rushed the ball into the net again, but the whistle had gone for off side. The game ended with the City forwards swarming all round Whiteheads' goal, Kilby keeping out a perfect fusilade of shots.
RESULT:
EXETER CITY 4 WHITEHEADS 0.
The Grecians were palpably not exerting themselves too much after the first fifteen minutes, in which they scored the first two goals, but at the same time Whiteheads were one of the best amateur teams seen at Exeter, and deserve credit for a plucky fight.
Their goalkeeper, particularly, gave a very fine display, except that once or twice he tipped the ball behind for corners when it was away from his goal.
