Match 17
Luton (h)
14th November 1908

Saturday, November 14th.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
EXETER CITY v LUTON TOWN.

Exeter won a hard and strenuous game by two goals to one, after leading 2-0 at half time. The ground was wet and muddy, with bare patches at either end, and good combination and clever play were difficult on such a surface, yet a fine fast game was played by both sides.

Luton Town made two changes at back and half-back. McCurdy was dropped and replaced by Foley, while R.M.Hawkes, the International, who had a damaged knee, was replaced by Jones. Exeter were represented by the players who had beaten Plymouth Argyle.

Teams :
EXETER CITY: Robinson; Craig, Bulcock; Ambler, Chadwick, Johnson; White, Watson, Mc Guigan, Bell, and Copestake.

LUTON TOWN: Platt; Foley, Gregory; F.Hawkes, White, Jones; Brown, Haycock, Menzies, Moody, and Stansfield.

Referee: Mr T.W. Handford, London.

Exeter City had much the better of the exchanges, and well deserved their success. After 20 minutes Bell got the better of Gregory Foley, and whilst going at full speed found the net with a shot into the corner, well out of Platt's reach. In the next few minutes Luton attacked all along the line, and Robinson came out of his goal to take the ball from Brown. Then McGuigan dribbled through and gave Bell a chance, but Platt saved, only for McGuigan to follow up and score himself.

HALF TIME: CITY 2 LUTON O

Directly the second half started White got away down the right and scored, but the whistle had blown for offside. After Robinson had saved twice a free kick was given against Ambler for handling, and Moody scored with a fast cross shot that was deflected into the Exeter net by Craig.

Robinson played a great game in goal for the City, and though on the losing side Stansfield and Brown were as good as any forwards on the field.

Result:
Exeter City 2, Luton Town 1.
