SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
BRENTFORD v EXETER CITY.

Exeter City may be considered a lucky team to have gone away from Brentford with the full points, for excepting in the matter of goals scored they were scarcely the superior side. Individually the players were clever, but their combination compared less favourably with that shown by Brentford, while it should be taken into account that the home side were a man short for the greater part of the game.

Brentford started in promising fashion, and Robinson had an early opportunity of showing that he has lost none of his old quality. The home side were still having the better of the play when a great mis fortune befell them about 20 minutes after the start, Hisbent having to retire with a cut over his eye, and taking no further part in the proceedings. Though thus handicapped, the Londoners continued to press, and forced several corners, but no goals resulted. At the other end Watson shot into the net but was given offside, and there was no scoring up to half time.

THE SECOND HALF

Brentford attacked on restarting, and end to end play followed, McIvor once having to save a point-blank shot from Copestake, while a little later there was a desperate scrimmage in the Exeter goal mouth, Robinson eventually saving at the expense of a corner. About ten minutes from time the City forwards got away, and McGuigan, receiving from White, scored a good goal with a rising shot. Brentford retaliated vigorously and Hamilton raced away on the left. Robinson rushed out of his goal to meet him, and both men came into collision and fell, amid loud demands for a penalty, but as the foul was committed outside the area a free kick was given instead. The ball was cleared and the Exeter forwards transferred the play to the other end, where Copestake shot a second goal for them in the gathering darkness. Time was called a moment later, leaving the City rather fortunate winners by two goals to nothing.
