SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
EXETER CITY V PORTSMOUTH.

A fast and keen game at St. James's Park between the City and Portsmouth was marred by an accident to Smith, who broke two bones in his right leg, and was taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. He was deputising for Thomson at right-back in the Portsmouth team, and was attempting to check Watson and McGuigan when the accident occurred.

The ground was in better condition following the re-turfing of the St. James's Road end, and the weather was mild but inclined to be showery. In the City's first attack Watson missed the goal by inches only, and Williams was prominent in two sharp thrusts by Pompey. White carried play to the Portsmouth end, and centred close in to goal. In attempting to stop the City forwards Warner conceded a penalty for handling the ball in the area, from which Chadwick gave Exeter the lead with a swift shot along the ground. This was after five minutes.

The City were having by far the better of the exchanges, and went further in front after 20 minutes, when Bell, receiving the ball from Ambler, scored with a lightning shot that completely beat Brown.

HALF TIME CITY 2 PORTSMOUTH O

Two minutes after the interval Buick set McMahon moving up the centre, but Robinson saved. Portsmouth, however, were not to be denied, and Kirby got away on the right, beat Johnson and Bulcock in a clever dribble, and centred for Reid to convert. The visitors had shown a great improvement in the second half, but suffered an unlucky misfortune when the injury to Smith reduced them to ten men, and it was not long before McGuigan, from White's pass, scored the City's third goal.

Copestake scored the fourth and final goal near the end, the shot being deflected by Brown into his own net.
