Match 24
ECFC v Millwall Athletic 25.12.1908

PLYMOUTH LEAGUE.
Argyle Reserves v Exeter City Reserves.

CHRISTMAS DAY,
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 25th 1908. Southern League:
Exeter City v Millwall Athletic.

As generally expected, there was a record crowd at the Exeter City v Millwall Southern League match at St. James's Park, when the City won a fine rousing game by 2-1. Nearly every part of the enclosure was packed, and there were at least 11,000, and in fact some estimates were as high as 12,000 present.

On the City side Chadwick reappeared, but Crelley deputised for Bulcock, whose ankle was again causing him trouble. Millwall, who arrived in Exeter last night, played Vincent at centre forward for Twigg, who has strained his thigh.

Teams :

EXETER CITY

Robinson; Craig, Crelley; Ambler, Chadwick, Johnson; Parnell, Watson, McGuigan, Bell, and Copestake.

MILLWALL ATHLETIC
Dean, Shand, Joyce; Stevenson, Jeffrey; Riley, Comrie, Blythe; Vincent, Jones, and Hunter.

Crelley was injured in the opening few minutes and was off the field for a quarter of an hour. Just as he returned Shand scored for Millwall after dribbling round Craig and drawing Robinson out of his goal.

Bell equalised with a fine shot within the next two minutes, and McGuigan headed through following a corner to give the City a 2 - 1 lead. This was the score at the interval.

In the second half play was mostly confined to midfield, where the teams were about equal. In the last minute of the game Jones had the chance of a lifetime, but his shot missed the goal by at least five yards. Exeter were somewhat lucky winners, for Millwall played well enough to have drawn.

Result: City 2 Millwall 1.

NOTES ON THE GAME

On the run of play Millwall were, perhaps, unlucky to be beaten. They enjoyed a larger share of the attacking, taking the game all the way through, especially in the second half. The fact remains however, that the Grecians were infinitely more dangerous when attacking, and in front of goal.

When the Millwall forwards got away, as they did times without number, they either hesitated in front of the posts or were well beaten by Craig, Crelley, and Robinson. Exeter, on the other hand, no sooner got moving than they threatened danger, and were thrustful in front of goal. far more

Watson again got through a prodigious amount of work, and always willing to take a half-back's share in defence. Crelley was lamed early on and never fully recovered. Notwithstanding this he played a fine game, as did Craig, his partner. was

This is the first return match the City have played, and they have the satisfaction of knowing that the famous "Dockers" have yielded three points out of four to them.

PLYMOUTH LEAGUE.

Argyle Reserves v Exeter City Reserves.

This important game in connection with the Plymouth and District League championship was played at Home Park in the presence of two thousand spectators. The weather was bright, dry, and cold, and a strong easterly wind blew diagonally across the field. The City were without Fenwick and Crelley, the latter playing for the Chiefs at St. James's Park, and the vacancies were filled by E. and W. Wells. The Argyle included Sutcliffe, McIntyre, Hakin, and Cook, all first team players.

Exeter took the lead just before the interval, Singlehurst heading a lovely goal following a movement between Drain and Sillick. Raymond levelled the scores early in the second half, following which Cook drew Fletcher out and shot into the empty net.

Plymouth now gained the upper hand and scored two further goals to make the final score
Plymouth Argyle 4, Exeter City 1.
