Match 27

PLYMOUTH AND DISTRICT LEAGUE.
City Reserves v Green Waves.

Saturday, January 2nd 1909.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
BRISTOL ROVERS v EXETER CITY.

Although conceding two goals, Exeter had the better of the first half, but were outclassed in the second. The ground was covered in frost and very slippery, but the football was quite fast and at times exciting.

ROVERS:
Cartlidge; Appleby, and Floyd;
Smart, Strang, and Higgins;
Peplow, MeCubbin, Corbett, Roberts, and Dargue.

CITY:
Robinson; Craig, and Bulcock; Ambler, Chadwick, and Wake; White, Watson, McGuigan, Bell, and Copestake.

Referee: Mr Rigden.

Attendance 6,000.

The Rovers half backs were slow to settle down, leaving the way open for Exeter to control the early stages of the game. In fact, the City nearly scored in the first minute, when a shot by Watson hit the post. Then Dargue got away on the left, drew the defence out of position and passed across the field to Roberts, who made a "bee-line" towards goal, and drove the ball into the net well out of Robinson's reach.

Another good move, initiated by Peplow and carried on by Roberts, enabled Corbett to head the ball into the net, and at the interval the Rovers held a lead of 2-nil, though against the run of the play.

Bristol had matters all their own way in the second half. Eight minutes after the restart Peplow's corner kick was met by McCubbin, who scored with a downwards header that rolled into the net just inside the upright. Further goals were obtained by Corbett, from a pass by Roberts, and McGuigan for Exeter, after Chadwick had made the opening. This was only a temporary setback for the Rovers, for whom Corbett put on the fifth goal ten minutes from the end, and completed his "hat-trick".

Rovers 5, Exeter City 1.
