Saturday, January 23rd 1909. SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
NORWICH CITY V EXETER CITY.

Norwich City broke a sequence of four drawn matches by defeating Exeter, and so turned the tables on the City, who gained their first success in the Southern League at the expense of Norwich. The crowd for today's game at the Nest numbered just under 7,000 at the kick off.
There was rather a quiet opening to the game, but the Norwich forwards showed a greater tendency to trouble the goalkeeper. After fifteen minutes' play Dunning put Tomlinson in possession, and with Robinson being drawn out, Tomlinson coolly steered the ball into the open goal. During subsequent play Robinson was more frequently in action than Roney, but dealt capably with everything until he contributed to his second defeat five minutes before the interval by running out, and in a mix-up between the goalkeeper, Tomlinson, and Smith, the latter shot the ball into the untenanted goal.

AN UNPLEASANT INCIDENT
At the time of shooting Smith was obviously offside, and the referee signalled to the spot for a free kick, but a protest from Tomlinson resulted in the referee consulting a linesman. Players of both sides gesticulated, and offered gratituous instruction, and when the referee pointed to the centre as a signal that the goal would be allowed there were angry protests from Robinson and some of the other Exeter players. The game was delayed for several minutes, and in the end Robinson, who was almost in the centre of the field, was urged by his comrades to return to his goal. The incident left an unpleasant taste, and it was just as well that the issue of the game did not hang upon this disputed goal. Exeter played well enough to score, if not to draw, and it was their fate to find Roney in his best form. In the second half Roney performed some excellent work, and no blame would have been attached to him had he been beaten by Watson and Bell. Exeter's forward play was better than that of Norwich, and with the defences fairly equal Roney was the determining factor.

Final score:
Norwich City 2-0 Exeter City

In the second half the Marines reduced the lead with a scrambled goal following a mix-up in the City penalty area.
