Match 40
ECFC v Southend United 8th March 1909

Monday, March 8th 1909.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
EXETER CITY v SOUTHEND UNITED.

Once again the City had to play a League match in pouring rain with their own ground little better than the one at the Crystal Palace was on Saturday. After several weeks absence McGuigan returned to the team, at inside right, in Watson's place. Wake took over the captaincy.

Exeter City:- Robinson; Craig, Bulcock; Ambler, Chadwick, Wake; Parnell, McGuigan, Drain, Bell, and Copestake.

Southend:- Cotton; Thompson, Molyneux; Emery, Johnson, Axcell; Barratt, Frost, Blott, Wright, and Jack.

Referee:- Mr T. Kyle.

Exeter were quickly on the attack, and tested Cotton on several occasions, Bell being prominent in finding the route to goal. When Southend took up the running the home defence was reliable, Robinson having very little to do. Midway through the first half Drain sent Copestake away on the left, the City winger centred accurately, and McGuigan headed through a perfect goal far out of Cotton's reach. Shortly afterwards Robinson injured his shoulder in effecting a save, and had to leave the field. McGuigan took over between the posts, and saved one or two shots in approved goalkeeping style.

Half-time:
Exeter City 1-0 Southend United

Play slackened off in the second half, with the rain still coming down steadily. The players were covered in mud, and scarcely able to be recognised, but Wake was brilliant in defensive work for Exeter, and Johnson likewise for Southend. Drain made an opening for Bell to work his way past Thompson and Johnson to score Exeter's second goal in fine style. Robinson, who had returned to goal, was beaten by Wright, who converted a centre from Barnes with a powerful shot. Afterwards Southend tried their hardest to equalise but the City defence would not yield.
Final score:
Exeter City 2-1 Southend United
