Match 42
ECFC v Brentford 13th March 1908

Saturday, March 13th 1909.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
EXETER CITY v BRENTFORD.

Exeter City continued their habit of dropping points at home just when they are wanted, and when on "paper form" the odds seem heavily in their favour. Previously this season they practically presented the points to New Brompton and Coventry City, and in this match they made a gift of them to Brentford.

The weather was perfect, but recent rain had left the pitch very sticky on top, and the ball soon became heavy.

EXETER CITY: Robinson; Craig, and Crelley;Ambler, Tierney, and Wake; Parnell, Watson, Bell, Drain, and Copestake.

BRENTFORD: McIvor; Rhodes, and Ewing; Hisbent, Jay, and Richards; Ryalls, Sugden, Reid, Connelly, and Buxton.

Brentford won by two goals to one, both the visiting notches being chalked up before the half time interval. The first came from a move by Ryalls, who eluded two attempts by Craig to dispossess him almost on the goal line. Robinson beat out the winger's shot, but Reid was immediately on the scene and promptly put the ball in the net. Ten minutes before the interval Connelly scored with a splendid drive, and at the other end McIvor saved a penalty taken by Watson, given against Jay for handling the ball.
Half time:
Brentford 2 goals, Exeter City nil.

Sugden missed an easy chance of putting Brentford three goals up, and subsequently the Exeter forwards got away, and Bell scored with a rasping drive that no goalkeeper could have saved. Following a good run and centre by Copestake, Bell almost scored again, and Watson was also unlucky, while Parnell put in a shot that rebounded off the top of the goalpost.

The football deteriorated in the closing stages, there being too many fouls and bad feeling displayed by both sides. The best players were Crelley and Watson for Exeter, and McIvor, particularly for his saving of Watson's penalty, Rhodes, and Ewing for the Londoners.

Result:
Brentford 2 goals, Exeter City 1.

Reserves match postponed.

The match between Exeter Reserves and the Green Waves, due to be played at South Devon Place, was postponed.
