Match 43
ECFC v Swindon Town 17th March 1909

Wednesday, March 17th 1909.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
EXETER CITY V SWINDON TOWN.

The City introduced J.Plant, of St. Luke's College, to the Southern League team at outside-left, and he nearly scored in the first minute, but receiving the ball from Bell and working into a good position he put his final shot just over the crossbar. Swindon Town, second only to Northampton in the League table, then replied with one of the best forward displays seen at St. James's, Rushton scoring after five minutes, and for a long time the City were quite out of it. But although frequently outclassed and beaten for speed, the home defence stood firm, and nothing further was put on the score-sheet before half time.
Exeter opened the second half as they did the first, by nearly getting a goal, Ling having to throw out from a corner. Swindon Town also repeated their first half history, Fleming beating Robinson with a typical shot after a few minutes' play. Rushton missed an easy chance of a third goal, but made amends a few minutes later, fine work by Fleming providing his opening. Exeter's only point came in the shape of a penalty by McGuigan, given against Marshall for fouling, but Jefferson added Swindon's fourth goal just before the end.
