Match 44
Luton v ECFC 20th March 1909

SATURDAY, MARCH 20th 1909:
LUTON v CITY,
SOUTHERN LEAGUE.

Exeter began well by winning the toss, and ended well by winning the game, although they were a trifle fortunate, most of the play being in favour of Luton. The weather was ideal overhead, but the ground was heavy and there was a strong wind blowing straight down the field. Although facing the breeze, Luton began in an attractive fashion, and in the first five minutes Robinson brought off two exceptional saves from Haycock, once diving at the forward's feet to capture the ball. Haycock's shooting was a feature of the game, but he had no luck at all. Ten minutes before half time Brown was heavily charged by Crelley,
and had to retire. He returned after the interval but could do very little.
Half-time:
Luton Town 0-0 Exeter City n

Two minutes after resuming Platt was in action, saving shots from Watson and Parnell, but a third shot, from Copestake at close range, beat him. Exeter's second goal came when Bob Hawkes failed to trap the ball and it ran loose to Watson, who beat Platt with a good shot from 25 yards. Robinson played a brilliant game in goal for Exeter, being ably supported by Craig and Tierney.
Result: Exeter City 2-0 Luton
The City's victory in this match takes them up to fourth position in the League table.
