Match 50
Torquay & District v ECFC 7th April 1909

Wednesday, April 7th 1909.
Friendly match:
Torquay and District v Exeter City.

The visit of the Exeter City team to Torquay attracted a gate of about 1,000, and the match took place under almost summery conditions, as far as the weather went.

The Grecians pressed at the start, Paltridge saving well. Then the local side mounted an attack, but sent the ball behind. Paltridge was called on to save many shots in almost continuous Exeter pressure, and he played an outstanding game. Towards the interval Drain missed an easy chance for Exeter, then sent another shot over the bar. At half time neither side had scored.
After Parnell and Watson had led a few raids on the Torquay goal, Drain opened the scoring with a fast shot, and followed with another one in a prolonged City attack. The local team were pulled up for off side in a rare sortie to the Exeter end, but a clever bout of passing between Deane and Evans resulted in the latter beating Robinson, to the huge delight of the local crowd. Frayne afterwards missed a good chance, and a penalty against the Grecians for hands was expertly saved by Robinson.
Result:
Exeter 2 Torquay and District 1.
Teams:
Torquay: Paltridge; Birbeck, Browne; Leonard, Bartlett, Frayne, Metters, Evans, Chaffe, and Deane. Thomas;
