Match 51
Woolwich Arsenal v ECFC 9th April 1909
Friendly

Good Friday, April 9th 1909.

FRIENDLY MATCH:
WOOLWICH ARSENAL v EXETER CITY.

Only about one thousand people were present at the Manor Field, Plumstead, the ground of the Arsenal F.C., and the game did not seem to be taken very seriously by the "Gunners". Exeter City, in fact, fairly monopolised the first half and led at the interval by a goal to nil. The scorer was Drain, who drove the ball into the net past a lot of players in the goalmouth, the Arsenal goalkeeper apparently being unsighted. Play was a little more vigorous in the second half, but Exeter were soon attacking again, and Drain scored his second goal. Beney then replied for the Arsenal with a goal from a penalty, awarded against Crelley for handling. Both sides scored again before the close, Bell for Exeter and Raybould for Woolwich.
Exeter City left a good impression on the crowd by their clean, clever play, the combination shown by their forwards being first class. Copestake and Bell were the best players on the field, the former especially delighting the crowd with his runs, which gave D.McDonald and Dick some trying times. Robinson was his usual safe self in goal.
