Saturday, April 10th 1909.
Friendly match:
Exeter City v Oxford City.
Fresh from their fine win at Plumstead against Woolwich Arsenal, the City entertained the famous amateur side, Oxford City, at St. James's Park. Exeter City selected the same team that beat Woolwich Arsenal, but Robinson reported ill, and as Fletcher was away at Devonport with the Reserves, Cann was hurriedly called upon to keep goal. Teams :
EXETER CITY:
Cann; Craig, and Crelley; Ambler, Johnson, and Wake; Parnell, Watson, Drain, Bell, and Copestake.
OXFORD CITY:
F.E.Gillams; A.E.Scothern, and R.A.Farquharson; A.W.Cocks, H.C.Greenfield, and A.J.Harrison; F.J.Draper, A.G.Tyrrell, W.Jakeman, E.C.Davis, and A.H.G.Kerry.
The weather was in keeping with spring, but the attendance fell far below the League gate average, only 3,000 being present. The kick off was at 3.15, and in order to enable Oxford City to catch an early train back only forty minutes each way was played. The Oxford team, in blue and white horizontal stripes, came out just after 3 o'clock for some exercises, and Watson led the Grecians out at 3.15 to the sound of hearty cheers, an acknowledgment of their win at Plumstead.
Exeter lost the toss and were set to face the sun. Greenfield set Kerry on the move straight away, and Cann had to stop a shot from Davis. At the other end Gillams punched away a shot from Bell that had some weight behind it, aimed towards the top right hand corner. Exchanges were fast and furious, and Cann had to run out to rob Tyrrell, then Davis put in a shot that went only inches over the bar. A quarter of an hour from the start Copestake sent across a sharp centre, and Bell, quick to the requirements of the situation, stooped down and glided the ball into the net with his head. Exeter City were easily the better team, and nearly scored on several occasions.
Interval:
Exeter City 1 goal, Oxford City nil.
Oxford had the best of matters for a few minutes, but it was Exeter who scored. Copestake swept across a scoring shot, which Gillams was unable to hold. The ball ran loose to Watson, who beat Farquharson and gave over to Parnell. The winger kicked in a square centre, and Drain, in a good position, put the ball in the net. In the very next minute Oxford made progress to the City end, and Davis sent in a beautiful drive that had Cann beaten all the way, but the ball glanced off the upright and went behind. A free kick to Exeter just outside the penalty area was placed too high by Wake, then Drain first shot wide, then headed over the bar. When Oxford attacked Cann partly saved from Davis, but the little inside-left recovered the ball and scored from close in. Back went the City, and a high, dropping centre from Parnell proved too much for Gillams. He tried to punch the ball away but missed it, and Bell ran the ball into the net for a very simple goal. It was a clean, sporting match, and quite the best friendly played at Exeter this season.
Result: Exeter City 3 goals, Oxford 1.
