SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
EXETER CITY v WEST HAM UNITED.
Exeter City played their last Southern League match at home, when they were faced by West Ham. A strong wind was blowing across the pitch, but otherwise the conditions were perfect. Watson won the toss, and Shea started the match by passing back to Piercy. Bell tackled Ashton and got the ball, which he passed out to Parnell. The latter swung across a high centre which Dawson caught, and returned the ball to midfield. Copestake was fouled by Shreeve, and Wake dropped the free kick nicely into the goalmouth, but Shreeve kicked clear. Watson put in a ground centre across the face of the goal, but Drain was offside. The crowd applauded Copestake for a fine run down the left wing, but he was eventually crowded out. Following this, the exchanges were more even with West Ham doing a share of the attacking. However, the gusty wind sent many passes wide of their mark, and play was generally in midfield.
Half time, no score.
The opening of the second half was all in favour of Exeter City, and Bell twice tested Dawson. Ambler tried a flying kick, but sliced the ball over his own goal line for a corner. However, this was of no avail to the Hammers, the ball being cleared by Ambler. The strong wind continued to play havoc with passes. A piece of individual skill by Copestake was followed by a strong volley from Watson, but the ball carried over the top and landed on the netting. Nothing was scored until a quarter of an hour from the close, when Watson crashed in a shot which Dawson could only parry, and before he could recover his balance Copestake dashed up and booted the ball into the top of the rigging. Exeter continued to have most of the play, and after Drain had missed a chance, Dawson had to save from Bell, Watson, and Wake, in turn.
Result:
Exeter City 1-0 West Ham United

WEST HAM: Dawson; Shreeve, Bourne; Yenson, Piercy, Randall; Ashton, Harrison, Shea, Costello, and Blackburn.
