Biographical Text

Church was a latecomer to the Football League being 25-years-old when he signed for Bolton Wanderers from his home town club of Castleford Town.

He went on to represent the Trotters in 41 league games before moving to Oldham Athletic in 1935. He was never a regular with the Latics and eventually totalled 23 games for them in the league, prior to signing for Exeter City in November 1937.

He went straight into the first team replacing the injured Patrick Tierney and made his debut in a 2-1 home win over Cardiff City. Church retained his place in the City team for the rest of the season, playing in 28 league matches for the Grecians. He was first choice keeper in 1938-39 as well and only missed four league games.

Church was transfer listed by City for a fee of £200, however, by the start of the 1939-40 season he had moved back to his native Yorkshire to live and had bought a business.

Henry died in 1984.
