Biographical Text
Goalkeeper Harry Church made in excess of sixty league appearances for Exeter City during the late 1930s. He joined the club from Oldham Athletic having earlier been with Castleford Town and Bolton Wanderers.
A latecomer to the Football League, Harry was twenty-five when he signed for Bolton Wanderers from his home town club of Castleford Town in 1930. He went on to represent the Trotters in 41 league games before moving to Oldham Athletic in 1935. Never a regular with the Latics, he signed for Exeter City in November 1937.
Harry went straight into the first-team, replacing the injured Patrick Tierney, in making his debut in a 2-1 home win over Cardiff City. Retaining his place for the rest of the season, he made 28 league appearances in 1937/38 followed by 38 during the following campaign.
Eventually transfer-listed for a fee of £200, Harry moved back to the West Riding at the outbreak of war and went into business. He died in Pontefract in 1984.
