EXETER CITY V BRISTOL ROVERS
After a very wet morning Exeter City were very lucky in having a brilliantly fine afternoon for their first home match, and there was nearly a record crowd present, numbering about 8000. This fact, seeing that the first two away matches were both lost, shows that the soccer game, as far as the professionals are concerned, has taken a very firm hold of the public. The Rovers brought a numerous body of supporters.
CITY:
Crossthwaite; Craig, and Crelley; Ambler, Chadwick, and Atkinson; Copestake, Watson, McGuigan, Bell, and Garside.
ROVERS:
Roney; McKenzie, and Westwood;
Smart, Williams, and Handley; Peplow, Mason, Corbett, Roberts, and Laurie.
Referee: Mr W.E.Russell, of Swindon.
Last year the clubs played a very fine game on the same ground. The City, though two goals behind at half-time, subsequently drew level. Today's match was a strenuous, bustling game, considerably different in character to those seen on the ground last season. The City played in much more forceful style, and kept banging away at goal instead of delaying their attacks by pretty but ineffective tip-tapping work when within striking distance. Unfortunately, however, the more robust style helped to create an atmosphere of undue excitement, and the game was chiefly remarkable for the number of free kicks awarded. As to the play, Exeter undoubtedly had much the best of the deal, attacking for quite two-thirds of the time. They were inspired by the getting of a goal within three minutes of the start, Watson heading in from a centre by Garside. It was close on the interval before Bristol equalised, Mason sending in a terrific shot immediately after Exeter's goalkeeper had warded off an attack with some difficulty. Exeter delighted their supporters by the sparkling dash that they exhibited. On the whole they were faster than their opponents, and reaped a lot of benefit thereby. Green was dropped, and Garside brought in to outside-left, Copestake crossing over to the right, and this change worked well, both showing splendid form.
Result: 1 - 1.
