Match 06
25th September 1909
Southern League
Norwich City (h)

Saturday, September 25th.
EXETER CITY v NORWICH CITY
Southern League Match
at St. James's Park.

City 2, Norwich 2. The result came as a disappointment to the home crowd, but at the same time Norwich City, in snatching their only two opportunities, revealed themselves as a difficult side to beat, and on this basis deserved to draw.

Bell opened the scoring for Exeter after 30 minutes' play, and ten minutes later Dunning equalised. After Bell had scored little was seen of the home forwards, and the Norwich defence was rarely in any kind of difficulty. Play livened up towards the close of the first half but never reached a high standard.

The second half saw Exeter playing up more brightly, and Watson regained the lead following nice work by Mc Guigan.
After this success the City perceptibly slackened their efforts, with the result that Norwich were practically presented with their second goal, Hubbard netting during a scrimmage in the goalmouth. Norwich were superior after this, but no further goals were scored. Chadwick and Watson were the City's best players.
Attendance 8000.

Chadwick worked with all his customary energy, and proved altogether too good for Gooch. Atkinson and Hartley ably supported Chadwick, and Hartley, who made his first appearance for the City, deserves to be congratulated on his polished display. Watson was easily the pick of the forwards, though Garside played well in the second half and sent across some very good centres.
