Southern League Match

NEW BROMPTON v. EXETER CITY

Brompton 3 goals, Exeter City 2. New Brompton had very little to spare, and had the City shared the points very little surprise would have been felt. The Grecians played robust football; they are this season a weighty team, and their hustling tactics duly prevented New Brompton from settling down.

New Brompton relied on the team that had taken them to the top of the League. Exeter were minus Hartley and Crelley, and Chadwick made a reappearance after missing the Charity Cup game at Plymouth. The weather had cleared up, and there were nearly 8000 people in the ground when the teams came out. The game opened brightly, and there were two goals in the first four minutes.
1. Sutherland smartly stopped Watson, who was going through, passed to Pickett, who made a lot of ground before swinging the ball over to Satterthwaite. When tackled by Craig, the home inside-left returned the ball to Pickett, who beat Crossthwaite with a low cross shot.
2. The lead was lost almost gone almost as soon as it was gained. A clever move on the Exeter left wing ended in Garside slipping the ball across the front of the goal, and Batcup, who failed to come out and gather it, was hopelessly beaten by McGuigan from four yards' range.

Exeter should have taken the lead when Garside crossed the ball in front of the posts, but Watson stood still and let it run by. The next goal, to New Brompton, was the best of the game. A clever advance by Court and Pickett put Reynolds through, and his shot went into the net off the inside of the post. McGuigan got the ball into the Brompton goal, but this point was disallowed for offside. Bell scored for Exeter close on half-time. Court scored the winning goal following a corner five minutes before the end of the match.

BROMPTON: Batcup; Sutherland, and Nobbs; Mahon, Strang, Higgins; Reynolds, Taylor, Court, Satterthwaite, and Pickett.

CITY: and Crossthwaite; Craig, and Jones; F Ambler, Chadwick, and
Atkinson; Copestake, Watson, McGuigan, Bell, and Garside.
